After extensive research, I havedecided to make a magazine revolving around
the rock genre. During my research I discovered that there are different
conventions and elements which haveto done in order to makea good
magazine, these include; Masthead, cover lines, a main image, appropriate
mise en scene and a compelling and eye catching story which will grab the
audience’s attention. Looking at both my magazine pages and the ones which I
used for inspiration, at firstglance you cannot see any similarities however;
there are aspects in these magazinepages which have given me certain
themes and ideas which have led to my final product.
Mise En Scene:
The majority of rock artists are Caucasian males so to make them stand out
more, they have to rely on the artist’s personality and how they are perceived
by the audience to help them gain awareness from their intended target
market. in the case of my magazines model, he is a white male which meets
the typical stereotypefor rock artists but also brings across the challenge of
him not standing out in the genre so I had to create a compelling back story
and personality for my model to make him stand out. Since my model was
white, I decided to usedarker lighting to help capture the sinister and dark
feeling that is the rock genre.

rock genre and by doing this it will help make my magazinemore appealing to
my target audience as the colours will appeal to the audience but at the same
time, the colour don’tstand out more than my artist making it so the audience
are caught by the look of the magazinewhile not being bombarded with lots of
different and conflicting colours and information. I got mostof my inspiration
fromKerrang and Rolling Stones.
I did use props however this consisted of a set of drum sticks and a guitar both
being held in the artist’s hand. I feel that the use of these props help to show
the audience his affiliation with the rock genre and shows us that he is a solo
artist due to him not sticking to one type of instrument but rather showing his
flexibility as an artistwhich has led to his growing success. Thereareseveral
instances in famous magazines where the artist will be showing off the
instruments which they play as to let the audience know whattype of musician
they are in the band. There was no make-up on my artist due to him being
male and because I didn’t feel there was a need as mostrock bands who wear
make-up tend to be more excessive, a good example would be Kiss with them
over the top make-up.
When it comes to the artist’s body language and positioning of my artist, I
discovered that using a medium shotis the mosteffective as it allows me to
show off his body language as well as getting the props in the shotalso. By
using a medium shotit also allows me to cover moreof the page which results
in making the artist more appealing to the readers. I made it so my artistwas
making eye contact with the reader as this will assistin captivating the
audience into wanting to read as they will feel a personalaffiliation with the
artist and whathe must say.
Magazine Subject:
As to keep with the stereotypes, I decided to aim my magazine at the male
audience as they are considered the ones who listen to rock music and are
who I have aimed my magazine towards. In terms of class, my magazineis
tailored more to the high-middle class who may have a part time job due to
their age.

Researching other double page spreads, I noticed that they included
interviews with the artists which helped to captivate the audience even more
and help them relate to the artist. In my contents page, I tried to include as
many topics that are appealing to my target market. For example, recently
there has been a lot of talk of new albums being released and so I decided to
make cover lines about it to raise the audience’s awareness of the news.
OverallI believe I have portrayed the rock genre well in my magazine.
Conventions of rock include dark clothing, messy hairstyles and make-up. My
focus was to have an artistwho looks like he is still in pain from his past
however now he has done well for himself. The lighting was hard to get right.
This is becauseit needs to go well with the colours of the magazine and the
skin colour of the artist.
