1. Question 2:
How do the photos of your magazine share similarities with the magazines that influenced
your production?
The main image that has been used on the cover of the magazine is not similar to that of
other magazines, as I have used a style that is unique to my cover. I have however, used
images found within a magazine such as ‘Kerrang!’ for inspiration, as the rock style and
attitude that is prevalent within them matched the total aim for my own magazine. I have
used the idea of a lot of interaction between the reader and the subject in each image, in
the form of pointing out at the camera to add depth, and direct eye-contact with the
camera, so that the reader feels as if they are experiencing the stories and interviews that
they are reading.
How does the shot type and angle play a part in the representation of your artist?
I have used a collection of mid-shots for the majority of the images that I have contained
within my magazine, as they allow a small amount of composition between the image itself
and the negative space of the surroundings, while maintaining the detail of each subject.
The mid-shots also work to provide a profile of the subjects, as everything from their
shoulders up remains in frame. This, combined with the eye-level angle of Antonio, is
another way in which the readers of my magazine are able to empathise with each of the
musicians that are mentioned.
2. How do the facial expressions/hair style represent your featured artist?
I have chosen to use a quite emotionless expression across the face of Antonio in the cover
image, as it provides the magazine with a sense of seriousness, making the headlines stand
out, and drawing attention to the detail of the cover. This effect is increased by blocking out
his eyes with dark tinted sunglasses, as it adds to the attitude of the image when paired with
the stern and composed look.
The slicked-back looking hair style is similar to that of the era of music that my magazine is
based around, however, by having his hair cut far shorter than it would have been, the more
modern style is apparent in Antonio’s appearance.
What impact did lighting have on the photos and the representation of the featured
artist?
The lighting that I have used to light Antonio’s face in my main cover image is the reason
that there is a large amount of shine in the platinum metal effect. The light has overexposed
some areas of the image, meaning that a large amount of contrast between the lighter and
darker areas is present.
These shadows and highlights provide a large amount of depth and detail in the image. This
is significant in the representation of Antonio, as it emphasises on him being the focus of
this edition of the magazine, and adds more detail into the image, removing the need for
bright colours.
What impact did choice of costume have on the representation of the featured artist?
I have chosen to use dark clothing for the main image of my magazine’s featured artist in
the form of a black leather jacket and dark sunglasses, contrasted against a grey shirt. As I
have mentioned before, these factors assist in creating the sense of attitude given off by the
image of Antonio, and they work to represent him in a more modern manner, rather than
that of original rock music and style.
3. Question 3:
What locations and outlets are suited to your target audience and why?
My target audience would be the kind of people to shop in places such as local businesses,
as corner shops and newsagents would make a music magazine an ideal small purchase. As
well as this, mainstream music shops, like HMV, would be perfect for the sale of a magazine
like mine, as almost every person to visit would be not only interested, but may feel
compelled to pick up a weekly copy, to use a guide for purchases of music, merchandise,
tickets and other items.
Will digital technology play a part in the distribution methods?
Throughout my research, I have found that online subscriptions for magazines have played a
huge part in the way that readers receive and enjoy their weekly editions. Whether by
arranging to have their magazine delivered to their door, ready for pick up from a retailer,
or simply delivered via digital download, online subscriptions have had a significant impact
in the ways in which magazines work with their readers.
I aim to use this within my own magazine, as I think the modern age of readers would
appreciate the shift into a modern age of technology, and the way in which my magazine
links into the older style of music would allow older generations of readers to involve
themselves in newer technology.
Which institution is best suited to your publication and why?
The Bauer Media Group, being a multinational media company, is the same publisher to be
responsible for the branding of ‘Kerrang!’ and ‘Q’, both of which are magazines that I have
drawn inspiration from in my own work. I think that it is an appropriately chosen institution
for my magazine, as I would expect it to appear in the same locations as the work I have
been inspired by, and the styles, content and iconic branding is something that I would think
that all of these magazines have in common.
4. Question 4:
Who would be the audience for your media product?
As I have previously mentioned, my magazine’s aim is to appeal to any potential readers
over the age 16+, and due to the nature of music having such a varied fan-base, I have not
chosen a particular gender to target.
However, my magazine’s style of fewer colours, but more detail in the form of metal-work, I
feel that it may be most applicable to a younger male audience. This is also due to the fact
that a more colourful magazine would usually be more applicable to a female audience, or
older readers, as is demonstrated through the style and colours found in other modern
magazines.
I think that the content of modern rock bands would be more appealing this audience as the
fan bases from bands such as the ones found in my contents page are more commonly
associated with younger male audiences.
What is the profile of a typical reader?
Due to my magazine’s music genre, a typical reader of it would most likely be similar to the
following examples provided.
Male Profile:
Name: Mark Abis
Age: 36
Hobbies: Playing the electric guitar, creating original music, traveling for tours,
etc…
Favourite Artist: The White Stripes
Favourite Song: This song is a rather old style song by The White Stripes, entitled ‘Girl,
You Have No Faith In Medicine’. This is an example of the kinds of people
that are familiar with older rock, but keeping in touch with modern
developments in the genre.
Female Profile:
Name: Morgan Wheeler
Age: 19
Hobbies: Adding to her music collection, listening to vinyl records, hiking, reading,
ect…
Favourite Artist: Imagine Dragons
Favourite Song: Radioactive by Imagine Dragons is an example of a modern rock band,
and despite this person’s interests in the age of music, they enjoy and
seek modern music. This type of reader is the link between the two
different generations of rock fans, as they are willing to involve
themselves in the history of the subject.
5. What are the shopping and lifestyle habits of your reader?
Due to my target audience being based mainly around teenage males, interested in music,
both old and new, I would not consider the shopping habits of them to be ‘frequent’. Mainly
this type of person would be found shopping in places such as local businesses, such as
corner shops or newsagents, at times of the day such as early morning and mid-late
afternoon, as these would be the times that they would be heading to and from school and
work. These kinds of visits to shops would mainly be for small purchases, making a music
magazine an ideal small purchase, as it narrows down the news to something they love and
enjoy, without needing to go to the trouble of researching everything that they want to
know each week.
The type of audience that my magazine would attract would not be of someone that visits
major shopping centres, besides mainstream music shops, like HMV. A music based
company such as this would be perfect for the sale of a magazine like mine, as almost every
person to visit would be not only interested, but may feel compelled to pick up a weekly
copy, to use a guide for purchases of music, merchandise, tickets and other items.
Question 5:
How did you attract/address your audience?
I have attracted by audience to the magazine through the use of the cover, and its iconic
title ‘Platinum’. I have chosen to use style over colour, as rock is not usually associated with
bright colour or high contrast, and the stylised cover will work to stand apart from other
magazines.
As well as this, I have used bold headings that stand out from the main bodies of text, so
that the readers are able to find the sections that they would like to be reading about,
making it more attractive upon first glance by avoiding the details hidden in smaller text.
