10. DAVID NOTON
David Noton, a renowned travel and landscape photographer, and runs his
own highly successful freelance photography company from his base in
Milborne Port, Sherborne on the Somerset/Dorset border. In his 35 years as
a roving professional photographer, David has travelled to just about every
corner of the globe. His images sell all over the world, both as fine art
photography and commercially in advertising and publishing, and his clients
include Canon, the National Trust, Royal Mail and BBC Enterprises/Lonely
Planet Magazine.
David was born in Bedfordshire, England in 1957, but within two months his
family had emigrated to California, as his Father (an aerospace scientist) was
recruited to work on the then rapidly expanding American space programme.
"Trans-Atlantic migrations shaped my childhood, as we returned to England in
the early’60s only to re-emigrate, this time to Canada, in 1965. The
subsequent six years growing up in Ontario were life shaping; I still feel a
strong bond to Canada".
David Noton travels the world taking photographs, but one of his favourite
images from 2017 is a picture of a majestic old tree in the heart of the English
countryside – was shot moments away from his home in Dorset.
11. DAVID NOTON
David has developed a real affection for the tree, which he describes
as an endless source of inspiration. "A couple of years ago, I was
commissioned by a local landowner [to show] how the landscape
changes over the seasons. I did a ‘four seasons’ set of pictures of this
beech tree, which is why I say I’ve built quite a relationship with it – I
wonder what tales it can tell."
After leaving school he joined the British Merchant Navy and served
for three years as a navigating officer on a variety of cargo ships.
During this time of constant travel, Noton began to develop an
interest in photography. Beginning as an attempt to document his
travels, photography soon became an all-consuming passion.

14. AUDIENCE THEORY
Audience theory is an element of thinking that
developed within academic literary theory and
cultural studies.
However, a target audience is the demographic of
people determined internally to be interested in
your products or services. Businesses use their
target audience to create “personas” that guide
their sales and marketing processes. Discovering
your target audience means looking at
information like gender, age etc.
Knowing your target audience can dictate how you
advertise, how you conduct campaigns, how you
develop and distribute content, and even how you
establish your online presence.

17. STATEMENT
I've looked at these specific people and topics for my contextual research because they all play and
important part for the next bit of my project but also because they link to the area, I plan on doing my FMP
which is print based and video. The reason I have chosen to do a print-based project and video is because i
want to be able to show the skills I have gained throughout the years and be able to put them together.
However, I plan to do a video to promote the fanzine because it will show I have used a variety of skills that
I've learnt. But I plan to do a print-based project as well because I enjoy that area and I want this project
to be the best of my abilities as I want to be able to have a career in this area but also to help me get into
university.
However, I do have to consider that this poject could be affected because of the covid-19 crisis, so
everything I do for this project can become challenging and I may not get everything to go as smoothly as I
would like. So that’s why I need to put everything into this project and find solutions in every part of the
project I do
