Q3 what type of institution might distribute your media and why
1. WHAT TYPE OF INSTITUTION MIGHT
DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
AND WHY?
Question 3 – Thomas Walker
2. WHAT IS AN INSTITUTION?
An institution is any company, organization or group
of people that creates, collects or distributes media
Institutions can release this media in many different
mediums and forms
An institution will have a unique and easily
recognisable identification.
Some examples of institutions include:
Warner Bros
21st Century Fox
FOX News
BBC News
3. WHO MIGHT DISTRIBUTE OUR PRODUCT AND
WHY?
To assess this I first looked at factors that make it
appealing to certain institutions.
Thriller Genre
Independent film
Full length film
Commercial film (made to make a profit)
Geographical Constraints
By using these factors you can see what institutions
would favour a media product like ours, or turn it
away.
4. LIONSGATE
Lionsgate is infamous for its thriller films, so much
so that they have two separate identifications for
their products, the thriller options pictured below
5. LIONSGATE
Lionsgate may favour our film as it is a thriller genre and
made for the purpose of commercialisation, It also fits
Lionsgate as it is a full length film and not a short film.
Examples of other films this institution has distributed
includes:
The Devils rejects (2005, Zombie, USA)
The Saw Franchise (2005, Bousman, USA)
American Psycho (2000, Harron, USA)
Many of the thrillers that Lionsgate have distributed
meet many of the same criteria and conventions that our
piece also includes. This makes it a likely contender as
an institution that would distribute our piece, however
due to the films smaller independent status it is not the
strongest candidate as it generally distributes high
budget films that are produced and filmed in the USA
6. PARAMOUNT PICTURES
Paramount Pictures is similar to Lionsgate in the
way that it distributes a lot of thrillers in a
commercial medium of cinema and DVD/Blu-Ray
Paramount’s releases include
Psycho (1960, Hitchcock, USA)
Shutter Island (2010, Scorsese, USA)
War of the Worlds (2005, Spielberg, USA)
7. PARAMOUNT PICTURES
While Paramount Pictures are the production
company behind many thriller films, they are not in
our list of companies who would distribute due to
several factors:
They are based in America
They cover such a wide range of films, they are not
specifically thriller related
They do not support smaller independent films
Because of these factors I believe that they would
be lower down in the scale than Lionsgate.
8. FILM4 PRODUCTIONS
Film4 Productions is a smaller scale British film
production company owner by Channel 4. It runs
many film competitions to enable new and
independent film makers to enter the world of film.
9. FILM4 PRODUCTIONS
Film4 has produced many other thriller films, both
large budget and smaller independent films such
as:
Dead Man’s Shoes (2004, Meadows, UK)
Black Sea (2014, Macdonald, UK)
The Debt Collector (1999, Neilson, UK)
I believe Film4 to be the most suitable institution
due to the following factors:
Geographical Location
Previous Work and Support of independent Films
Inclination to the thriller genre
Various mediums to commercialise film (TV, Cinema,
online, etc.)
