1. Institutional Research
The Horror sub-genre that I am hoping to look at and develop into a short
opening is the Slasher sub-genre. The number one film for the Slasher sub-genre
is the 1996 movie Scream, directed by Wes Craven. The film claimed $6,354,586
in its opening weekend and overall claimed $103,046,663 at the box office. The
next two films on the list are the sequels to the film, all of them distributed by
Dimension Films. Judging from the figures shown here, people can assume that
the Scream series is one of the most successful Horror franchises to ever hit the
screen.
Dimension Films has released mostly Horror movies throughout the years, the
most notable being Hellraiser III, Halloween: The Curse Of Michael Myers and
Dracula 2000.The company is vertically integrated and is also owned by The
Weinstein Company, which has been active from 2005-present. The Horror
genre (according to the-numbers.com) has an average gross of $27,638,923 and a
total gross of $9,093,205,812 since 1995-2012.
According to the graph above, Horror movies have had a gradual up and down
relationship with sales at the box office, we can that more Horror movies were
distributed in 2007 (with films such as Saw IV, The Orphanage, 28 Weeks Later
2. and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning). The sales of these Horror
films can be either at the cinema or through home distribution, such as straight-
to-DVD titles. This shows how the sales of Horror is still going strong through the
years and how in recent years it has built up more of a distribution.
The company that I would choose to distribute my film would be Lionsgate, this
is because they have distributed some of the most critically acclaimed Horror
movies of the last decade such as The Devil’s Rejects, The Cabin In The Woods,
The Last Exorcism and the Saw franchise. The company is also the most
successful independent film distributor-studio in North America. The studio is
also known for being the distributers of the world’s biggest selling documentary
Fahrenheit 9/11. Horror has been one of the best genres of the last decade for
films in the cinema.
