5. ALBANY PLAN OF UNION
1754 in Albany, NY
Plan proposed by Ben Franklin to unite the colonies under one
government
Goals- form an alliance with the Iroquois, and form a defense
system
Iroquois did not agree, but promised to remain neutral in the F&I
War.
Colonies rejected plan
6. FIGHTING
Fighting occurs over 7 years between French
and British.
British eventually cut off French supplies, and
FR allies (Indians) give up.
British seize Spanish territories when they join
French
7. TREATY OF PARIS, 1763
Formally ends F&I War
British take control of New France
Spain gave Florida to Britain
France gave Spain New Orleans and all land
West of Mississippi River
France has no more land in North America

10. NEW ACTS ON COLONISTS
To prevent colonists from smuggling in
goods, Britain passes series of laws and
creating customs duty.
Smugglers tried in vice admiralty courts (no
jury, followed British law=strict)
Writs of Assistance- allowed British to seize
illegal goods

paper, paint, and tea

formed to protest British rule and keep all
colonists informed.

13. BOSTON “MASSACRE”
March 5, 1770
Colonists taunting British soldiers at customs
house
Scene became chaotic, soldiers fired into crowd
5 died- first was Crispus Attucks
News spread quickly
Tempers died down when Britain repealed most
of Townshend Acts
15. BOSTON TEA PARTY
Tea Act of 1773 angered colonists
Ships that went to NY and Phila forced back
to Britain
In Boston, a group dressed as Indians snuck
on the ship and dumped 342 chests of tea
into the harbor

Britain passes the Coercive Acts
