2. PROCLAMATION OF 1763: England
won the French and Indian War. As a result,
France lost all of her land in North America.
England gained the land. However, it was a
very expensive war. The government could not
afford a war with Native Americans. To
prevent a war, the English government
attempted to stop American colonists from
moving onto Indian land. Americans were not
allowed to cross the Proclamation Line and
move onto Indian land. American colonists did
not obey because they wanted the cheap/free
land to farm on.

1754: Albany Plan of Union
-Proposed by Ben Franklin to get the colonies to join
together for common defense. Would create council to
run colonies.
-Colonies turned down plan.

3. •The English government (Parliament) began passing taxes to raise money to help pay back the expenses of the
war. The following taxes are a direct result of England’s winning the French and Indian War. These taxes were
passed by Parliament without colonial representation.
1. Sugar Act: Tax on sugar, coffee, and molasses.
2. Currency Act: Colonists had to pay debts in gold or silver.
3. Stamp Act: Tax on legal papers, newspapers, cards, ads.
4. Townshend Acts: Writs of Assistance, taxes on lead, paper, glass, and tea.
5. Tea Act (Tax): Tax on tea.
•American Response: American colonists angry with taxes due to the lack of representation. “No Taxation
Without Representation.” Colonists responded by doing the following:
1. Boycott British goods.
2. Smuggling goods into the country to avoid taxes.
3. Forming groups such as Sons of Liberty and Daughters of Liberty.
4. Colonists speak out about taxes and protest in front of government buildings.
5. Boston Tea Party.
•Boston Massacre: Colonists in
Boston protesting government.
Soldiers fired on colonists.
•Sons of Liberty made British look
bad in order to gain support from
colonists.
•Boston Tea Party: Colonists
boarded merchant ships and dumped
tea into Boston Harbor as a protest.
•American protests to Stamp Act.
4. •England passed laws to punish the
colonies: The Intolerable Acts
1. Port of Boston closed
2. Power of royal governor increased
3. Colonists had to quarter British
soldiers
4. British troops sent to Boston to
enforce law.
•Colonies hold meeting: First Continental

1. Colonies had right to make laws
2. Organized a boycott of British goods
•The Americans began building up military
supplies. The British in Boston sent a force
of 700 soldiers to find the supplies. The
American minute men meet them at
Lexington and then at Concord. This is the
beginning of the American Revolution.
•Paul Revere rode to warn the
colonists that the British were
coming.
•Quartering Act: American
colonists forced to allow British
soldiers to live in their homes.

•Battle of Bunker Hill: June 17, 1775
-British attack Americans. Americans forced to
retreat, but over 1,000 British killed or wounded.
•British charged twice and were
beaten back. Americans ran
out of ammunition and
retreated on 3rd
charge. British
took the hill on 3rd
charge.
