2. PROCLAMATION OF 1763: England
won the French and Indian War. As a result,
France lost all of her land in North America.
England gained the land. However, it was a
very expensive war. The government could not
afford a war with Native Americans. To
prevent a war, the English government
attempted to stop American colonists from
moving onto Indian land. Americans were not
allowed to cross the Proclamation Line and
move onto Indian land. American colonists did
not obey because they wanted the cheap/free
land to farm on.
Iroquois
supported the
English.
Hurons
supported
the French.
Started over the
Ohio River
Valley area.
•STEPS TO THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION:
1. FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR: 1754-1763
1754: Albany Plan of Union
-Proposed by Ben Franklin to get the colonies to join
together for common defense. Would create council to
run colonies.
-Colonies turned down plan.
England France
Proclamation Line of 1763
•The English government (Parliament) began passing taxes to raise money to help pay back the expenses of the
war. The following taxes are a direct result of England’s winning the French and Indian War. These taxes were
passed by Parliament without colonial representation.
1. Sugar Act: Tax on sugar, coffee, and molasses.
2. Currency Act: Colonists had to pay debts in gold or silver.
3. Stamp Act: Tax on legal papers, newspapers, cards, ads.
4. Townshend Acts: Writs of Assistance, taxes on lead, paper, glass, and tea.
5. Tea Act (Tax): Tax on tea.
•American Response: American colonists angry with taxes due to the lack of representation. “No Taxation
Without Representation.” Colonists responded by doing the following:
1. Boycott British goods.
2. Smuggling goods into the country to avoid taxes.
