Professional Profile
Steven is a versatile and hardworking Civil Engineer in the rail sector with over
three and a half years experience. With a background of site engineering and
consultancy, Steven is able to adapt to new challenges presented and has the
confidence to tackle them efficiently.
Steven has experience in the use of various structural engineering software
such as LUSAS and Super Stress whilst being highly respected by client and
colleagues alike for his site knowledge and the ability to rectify site problems.
Steven is able to follow instructions well, and complete tasks to the highest
standard possible within a required timescale under minimal supervision.
Experience
AECOM (Swindon, England) 05/2015 – 12/2016
Assistant Engineer 2015-2016 / Senior Assistant Engineer 2016
 Client meetings and organising of shifts and requirements
 Checking of calculations and designs
 Structural calculations and connection design
 Design of footbridge strengthening
 Design of stabling facilities and associated modular buildings
 Construction support to major CASR project
 Inspections, reporting and repair guidance for multiple, diverse projects
 Design of FRP structures and stainless steel ancillaries
 Teignmouth Footbridge (6 months) Lead Engineer:
The design included extensive calculations proving the design for the
strengthening of the footbridge. In support of this, Super Stress and LUSAS
structural software were used to calculate required steel sections.
Additionally, cladding, roof, windows and paint system were among a
multitude of details produced to form a complete design. This, in line with a
schedule of repairs, allowed the contractor to undertake and complete their
complex work. A staging construction sequence for the contractor was
produced, including an outline temporary work design to prove that the stated
repairs could be built and installed safely. The staging was derived from past
experience and a common sense approach.
 Great Western Route Modernisation (2015-2016):
The project involved undertaking full structural inspections, detailing suitability
for overhead line fixings, cable route fixings and giving clients feedback on
condition. Many different bridge construction types including steel girder,
masonry arch, truss, viaducts and more were surveyed for this project with
guidance on various remedial measures provided to the client.
 West Ealing Sidings (4 months) Lead Engineer:
This multi-discipline project involved the design of a modular building fully
fitted for the use of the site team, outline steel pile design and undertrack
crossings. In addition, provision of walking routes, road rail access points and
cable routing in a congested site were provided.

Competencies
Full UK Drivers Licence
Network Rail Personal Track Safety
1-day Emergency First Aid
CSCS for Managers
Corrodere Coating Supervisor
Site Supervisor Safety Training
Scheme
New Roads and Street Works
Act
 Sudbrook Platform (4 months) Lead Engineer:
The project involved designing multiple levels of FRP platforms and associated
FRP ladders to be installed into an integral water pumping shaft for a railway
tunnel. This unique job involved design and analysis using a combination of
hand checks and LUSAS structural analysis software. These were founded on
stiffened stainless steel supports which had to be anchored with a specific type
of resin due to the harsh environment inside the shaft.
Dyer and Butler (South West England, Various Locations) 05/2014 - 05/2015
Engineer / Site Agent
 Site management.
 Working to tight deadlines.
 Direct labour and sub contractor organisation.
 Proactive approach to deliver simultaneous projects.
 Writing of safety critical paperwork.
 Taw River Viaduct (6 months) - £1.5m:
In charge of day to day operations of the project including overseeing direct
labour and two sub-contractor companies. This included organising paperwork
(task briefings and permits), focusing on site safety and providing assistance to
the team when required. Role also involved inspection of steel elements of
bridge and relaying information back to Project Management.
 Kingford Underbridge (4 weeks) - £150k:
Had to mobilise site set up, produce safety critical paper work, organise
scaffold erection and manage steel repairs for an emergency job alongside the
Taw River. The project was high priority to Network Rail as a crack in a cross
girder rendered the bridge under strength and a temporary speed restriction
was placed on this section of line. Key challenges included organising sub-
contractors and direct liaising with the client. Due to the urgency of the
project, there was high pressure from regional managers / project
management / Network Rail to deliver the project on time which was
achieved.
 Hayle Viaduct (5 months) - £6.5m:
Tasked with organising and identifying steel work repairs to areas of significant
section loss and corrosion, relaying back to the Network Rail project team and
an inspector verifying my work. This area of work was high cost / high risk to
the project/programme and challenges include keeping track of all repairs
over 37 spans on the viaduct.
QTS Group – Rail (Scotland) 05/2013 – 05/2014
Work Experience / Engineer
Initially aided surveying engineer, working full time for 3 months. Assisted in
laying drainage paths and expanding surveying knowledge; this work provided
constant site experience, in numerous locations around Scotland. Following
this, I began working in the rail office understanding paper work requirements
for Network Rail to allow projects to progress (Work Package Plans, Method
Statements etc.). Time was also spent with designers, travelling to locations
around Scotland to investigate earthwork problems – remedial options
discussed and actively involved with this process. Many hours of experience
working on track was gained (Line Blockage / Possession / safeguarded) as well
as having a couple of months full time site experience.
