Profile I am an experienced civil engineer with a great deal of experience in roads, currently
engaged as Project Manager on a tunnels scheme for Highways England with an outturn
value of £50m. With twenty eight years’ experience in Engineering, Project and Systems
Management and design. I am delivery focused and work well as a team whether is it is
as the leader or member. I spent my first 9 years in the Construction environment, driving
effort in site resourcing, materials scheduling, hands-on construction on site together with
budget control. Subsequently I gained experience with Civil & Structural Engineering
Consultants, specialist engineering software firm, and later with Highways England
(Agency). Experience includes all technical aspects of the industry, from preparation of
project engineering details to specification, Project planning and scheduling, and
fundamentally; stakeholder management. My exposure spans multi-nationals, regional
and small firms.

Area4 tunnels – The complete refurbishment of the Southwick and Roundhill pair of twin
bore tunnels is taking place in locations of key regional and national significance. Effective
control of these works will influence traffic flow through the strategic ports of Dover and
Folkestone. This is an exciting opportunity to advance Highways England use of tunnel
systems technology. I have been central in formulating the business case and bid for
funding for this scheme, including a thorough analysis of risk and impact. In collaboration
with highways systems internal experts and external consultants I have defined a project
plan which produces a whole life operating and control strategy which breathes life back in
to decades old tunnels, while ensuring cross platform communication and long term
sustainability of maintenance and safety aspects. Using the latest financial software tools to
model and manage the budget of £50m over 3 years, I have included a monthly
performance report of supply chain members against a Primavera based schedule, while
forecasting is adjusted through Oracle profiling. I always strive for a clear forward look of
spend in order to reduce variance. With a daily vehicle load of 65 000, each tunnel forms a
critical part of the UK strategic road network. This scheme is being delivered fast track and
with precision to fulfill reputational demands.

I am now acting as sole Project Manager on the A23 Handcross to Warninglid - 3.8km
widening and improvement scheme through an area of outstanding natural beauty within
West Sussex. This scheme, which is now in final handover, had an overall value of £77m
was delivered on time, within agreed budget and to the standards required by HE and
national standards bodies despite delays due to some atrocious weather conditions. One of

the key success stories of this project was our exemplary health & safety performance, &
integrity when dealing with internal and external stakeholders, achieved through direct
communication with MPs.
Aspects of the project I have personally completed include:-
• Monthly invoice and application approvals, tracking and computing of accruals. Applying a
Value for money philosophy (consistently) has contained budget within ministerial approval.
• Forecasted budget via Oracle systems, which deliver full year audit trail.
• Formulated and managed the extensive Road Safety Audit (stage 3). An iterative
approach has culminated in a thorough tracking, and close out, of issues that were raised.
• Facilitated Standards choice and Handover to West Sussex County Council through direct
collaboration, and tabling options early in the process.
•Directed highly technical sub contract exercises such as Directional drilling by BT, and the
Electrical utility companies.
•Appraised Risk through the use of supply chain wide RAMS (Risk Assessment Method
Statement) reports.
Bentley Systems Inc., Horsham Nov 2000 – Dec 2012
Programme manager / Analyst
• Development analyst & manager for engineering software, world wide deployment and
maintenance, for European & USA leader.
• Directly consulting to major UK Engineering firms: Hyder Halcrow, Mouchel, Network Rail,
Capita Symonds, Jacobs, URS, and Transport for London.
• Through maintaining project team structure and line of report, resourcing and skills were
constantly restructured to suit the needs of changing project demands.
• I habitually collaborated with Bentley team on client needs to Identify & schedule specific
avenues for new software development.
• Follow up of milestones amongst the team via 'test reports' on Microsoft Access based
system. I used a ‘reintroduction’ approach to return client need milestones to the schedule.
Crouch Waterfall & Partners, Godalming February 1997 – October 2000
Civil engineer, Project planner
• Docklands Light Railway: I produced the client asset management database which not
only ensured compliance with safety & works standards centrally, but created client trust.
•I identified & tabled risk areas, initiated changes to site procedures & equipment which
effectively rationalized the project against Railtrack defined SMART objectives.
• Preparation of Bill of Quantities to CESMM3. Produced GANNT charts and schedules.
• Other Project examples: Millmead Lock, Kennet and Avon Canal Project, Andover and
Winchester Police stations for Hampshire Constabulary, Diddlesfold Manor Ponds scheme.

Knight Piesold Ltd, Ashford, Kent & Durban, South Africa April 1991 – January 1997
Project engineer
• Multinational Engineering consultants. Project engineer plus design and data modelling for
large infrastructure and road developments.
•I used my ability to gain rapport with partner firms by connecting on a personal level. This
was a period of building strong inter-company team structures to deliver complex publicly
funded deliverables.
• Project examples: Darvill waste-water treatment works, Glenwood Township and roads
network development, Langkop suburban water reticulation
Group 5 Construction Ltd. Natal, South Africa January 1984 – March 1991
Contracts Engineer
• Major national construction contractors. As a project engineer I produced calculations of
quantities for billing externally, and for reporting internally to the targets team to
demonstrate profitability.
• My focus also needed to be accurate setting out and execution of heavy civil engineering
works to tight schedules; these was achieved through checking & double checking.
• Project examples: Phoenix water works, SAPREF petroleum fire-fighting facilities, Great
Umfolosi River bridge (300m RC post-tension), Tutuka power station
