3. Primary and secondary research was really important when it
came to this rotation. I created a survey on peoples ideal short
film and the genre of the film too even though there were mixed
results. For my secondary research I looked at statistics of short
films. As my short film was a murder mystery I decided to look at
the programme 'How To Get Away With Murder'.
Next was my experiments, the first one was to watch a short film
that didn't have any sound to it. I watched this a few times
because I needed to figure out what sounds it needed that I was
able to find around college. After, was the short film we got into
groups and had to make up a story from the storyboard and sheet
with hints and tips on how to start it. For this one we had to figure
out what sounds I needed as well.
4. As usual for planning, I started off with a couple of ideas that
needed to be written down on paper. It was quite challenging to
complete as I wasn’t absolutely sure on what I wanted to do.
I researched different short films on YouTube. Another part of
planning was the proposal which was all about my audience,
rationale and a project concept. I found this very useful to get
everything written down as I was starting to get an idea put
together properly. This also helped with figuring out my target
audience.
By producing the schedule which helped with knowing what to do
and when to do it.
5. For this project I did not have good time management at all. I
think this was the worst time management that I have ever had for
any project. I know now how to manage my time with the next
project. I don't think I needed additionally time but if I did I would
have improved on my idea and seen what I could do to make sure
it made more sense.
Also, I would improve on my music and sound effects that are on
the short film. I would find some proper music that actually goes
with the fi
6. Both have been filmed in a school or college
One difference is story line. Mine is about a student that gets
murdered and the other is about a teacher getting murdered.
Another difference is the lighting. The Murder Mystery has used a room
with a lot of light whereas I have used a corridor which is quite dark.
7. The sound on The Murder Mystery is rather fuzzy. In mine you
can hear background noise.
They have added jazz music throughout the whole film. I have
used dramatic music.
8. Both have been edited the similar ways.
Both have been posted onto YouTube.
Both have used college/school.
9. I think No Choice But Murder is
alright. I know there was a lot to
improve on though. Throughout
production I was always looked back
to see if any of the clips were blurry
and if they were then I would retake
the shot. In the image to the right you
can see it is quite dark which means
there was a lighting issue there that
needed to be sorted out.
I would improve on the story line as it
doesn’t really make much sense.
Some strengths are the acting. One
weakness was myself not being
organised enough.
10. For my short film more 16-24 age range responded to the questionnaire. I
think my short film will appeal to my audience as it will keep them
entertained and interested. This will be wanting to know what happens
next. I will be using 16-18 year old guys and girls for my film.
From my questionnaire I asked the question 'what kind of mysteries do
you like?' and the majority of the audience picked the category 'murder'
Another question was 'was kind of sound effects do you expect from a
murder mystery?' the response was to build up on some different sound
effects such as screaming, suspenseful or sinister.
12. What did you like about the product?
I feel as though this is a very good product which links together well. The audio
makes the film more atmospheric and action packed. All your shots are in focus and
have good lighting. I think you have created a film which is very enticing for your
target audience.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
I do think that the last shot could do with more clarification as it someone who may
not understand the film wont know what is going on. Maybe the shot at the end
could have had different music as it shows that the timeline has moved on.
Hannah Palfreeman. (2018) Peer Feedback (conducted on 09/02/18)
13. What did you like about the product?
I think the sound editing in the film was really good and the soundtrack fit the tone of
it pretty well. I also think the film does a good job of building tension before the
character is killed. The music gets more intense and the voiceover emphasizes the
danger of the situation.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
The ambient noise in the background at the beginning could use a bit of work, as it
makes it loo like the actors are miming their argument. The acting wasn’t the best
either, a few retakes wouldn’t have gone amiss.

14. What did you like about the product?
Something which I really liked about the short film would be the section between 30
seconds and 45 seconds because the audio links very well to the visuals because it
looks like a loop which is very cool. Another thing would be the way in which the
clips work well together with each other.
What improvements could have been made to the product?
Something which I didn’t really understand was the plot of the whole short film, this
is the only thing which I feel like could be explained a bit more.

15. What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
Whilst I was reading through my peer feedback, I thought there was a
lot of improvements that I knew I needed to make and agree with 100%.
There was some clear confusion at the end of the film which doesn’t
help. This could have been improved big time.
What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
I don’t think there is anything I disagree with because all feedback is a
good improvement point.
16. What changes would you make to your product based upon your peer feedback
and why?
From my feedback I would definitely improve on the ending of my film as it did
not make any sense at all. That bit was an improvised bit which shouldn’t have
gone in.
Another part I would improve on would be the whole storyline for the film as
when I started producing it, I was starting to not like the idea anymore.
Also, the sound effects could have had more work to it. I could have make sure
that there was sound effects for when the couple was arguing so it made more
sense.
