2. What makes a successful poster
• Design/ colours that match the genre or sub genre
• Release date
• Cast of actors or main actors
• Title
3. examples
• Someone drew the poster (around this time)
• Like a work of art
• Background colours show that its going be about flying in a plane
also say this about the picture of the plane and title
• List of actors at the bottom (billing block) so people can see the
famous actor. Almost like you must get up close to it to see who plays
in it.
• Doesn’t give actors away from a small glance
• Red writing and the plane being in a knot doesn’t tell you much only
that there is danger and that its going to be all over the place
• There is a tagline below the title
• No director listed maybe one of their earlier films
• Studio is also there at the bottom
4. • Instantly recognize the character as James bond
• The background is black to make the white yellow and orange
text sick out for people to see.
• Pictures of the stereotypical thing bond does
• Actors that they want you to see are in a bigger font than all the
others at the bottom of the poster.
• Multiple tag lines
• Billing block in the bottom of poster
• No release date
• Missing certificate of some kind
• Can't see the studio who produced the film
5. • Can recognize the actress on the front of the poster
• Has:
• Title
• Studio
• Main image
• Missing:
• Billing block
• Tagline
• Accurate release date
• Director
• Bbfc certificate
• Actors' names
• Girl is covering her mouth to “not breathe” or scream etc. shows the panic and emotions on her face indicating a
horror movie.
• At the top of the poster, it says “From the creators of Evil Dead” showing that evil dead was successful and indicating
this movie will be good also.
• Colours resemble fire and danger and blood in my opinion. Reminds me a bit like the poster for scream.

The white around the dark figures doesn’t give much away about the
characters only assuming that one of the characters is the exorcist. Keeps us
wondering like we need to watch the film to find out. Also the use of the
colour purple could also symbolise the mystery.
The directors name is one of the most easiest things to see. Shows that it’s a
good director with a good reputation and is more well known. Makes people
expect good things from it.
Over time added more detail to show the house and the figure more clearly and the purple is slightly
barker and bluer.. Unlike the original movie poster this one below shows the release date/ the first day
its performed. Left the idea of the original picture so people recognise it more easily.
7. Has:

Bbfc certificate

Trees in the main image are like a big spider
Dark colours and a view which could show how peaceful the place was until
the catastrophe happens. “all is quite in ________. Until the spider”.
Over time added a single tiny
spider in the middle of the
poster to almost foreshadow
what is going to be a
problem. And how small it is
but how large the problem is.
Adds a lot more to attract
more people.
8. Has:
Main image
Title
Tagline
Billing block

Missing:

Actions names
BBFC certificate
Main image is of Jason's hockey mask with blood on it which shows that
either he's going to kill again but is going to get killed showing its final.
The red writing matches the blood around the mask
White text on a black poster makes it quite eye-catching
Shows the type of
environment the story is in.
where Jason lives because it’s
the scene in his figure. The
four characters in the back
shows them scared and that
they stick out a bit in the
main picture.
9. Types of poster artists
• Drew struzan – most common work was for star wars
posters
- Made posters through digital manipulation (one of the first)
- Always incorporated characters and how they are presents
for example with the poster for the Hook movie Robin
Williams is the biggest face of the poster and is smiling
showing that he is the main character (protagonist) but the
person who plays Hook is smaller and he looks angry
showing the antagonist.
10. • Reynold Brown – used to make the poster by hand using his
skills in art
- Posters were quite cartoon like
- People today believe his posters are works of art
- Gave stuff away in the poster to easily attracted the right
audience
- The title and the picture are the same thing with a lot of
this posters like the one on the left. And like the poster for
the movie Tarantula and it has a huge spider on it.
- A realist artist
11. • Saul Bass – very symbolic posters that shows a key object of
thing to do with the movie. For example the poster for the
movie The Man With the Golden Arm has a arm of it.
• Used very eye catching posters. That are quite different
compared to other poster styles and designs.
