Generate ideas and plan the script for a media product, in response to a client brief.
SCRIPT TITLE:
Signing off
WHAT IS THE SCRIPT FOR?
My piece Signing off is going to be a horror Film from Film4
BRIEF & WHAT YOU WILL PRODUCE
I have been asked to create a Sub genre Horror Movie script that is 6-10 minutes long or 6-10
pages long.
The Horror movie script shall have a target audience of males and female ranging from late
teenagers to early 30s. To do this I have made the main characters/ groups of 6 friends as late
teens to young adults.
The stereotypical group of friends in the Horror movie shall attract the older audience ages of the
target audience because they are use to growing up with Horror movies that involve the
stereotypical group of friends. However, there are also new ideas in the script that will attract the
younger ages of the target audience.
CONTENT
The storyline of Signing off is that on an October night Jenny (our protagonist) invites her 5
friends (Chris (the one who nobody likes, Kate’s twin brother), Stacy, Gavin (couple), Kate (nerd)
and Brad (dumb jock) to stay round with her at Jenny’s Grandmas creepy, old fashioned,
haunted (but they don’t know it yet) house. As they are checking out the house someone finds a
Ouija Board and thinks it would be cool (because its October) to use it and see if the house is
haunted. They set it up and open the convocation with a ghost/spirit, they end up freaking out
because it actually worked and the Ghosts are released into the house and try to attack the
group, however they didn’t “sign off” properly so the ghosts and spirits are still around and have
a connection to the living, so the ghosts and spirits target the 6 friends. They start killing them
one at a time. There are hangings, drowning, stabbings, etc. eventually they find out that the
main Ghost is Jenny’s Grandmas late husband (who wasn’t the nicest of people, only cared
about money and what he wanted to do and pretty much neglected Jenny’s Grandma) they
eventually find a way to deal with the Ghosts and spirits (sign off of the Ouija Board). Only Jenny
and Chris survived (Chris changes and become a decent person now) and leave the house after
calling the police. The police and Jenny’s Grandma arrived (and they say that the group got
high, and someone must have broken in) but drag the two in for questioning and they try to
explain it to grandma before they are taken away, and she doesn’t believe them
GENRE
The genre of my Film Signing Off is Horror and has the Subgenre of Paranormal
because the movie involves ghosts and spirits. Which I have involved in the story. This
is similar to the movie The Exorcist.
LANGUAGE TO BE USED & WHY
Unit 22: Task Two
Generate ideas and plan the script for a media product, in response to a client brief.
There will be a blend of elaborate and restricted code. For example, there will be more
elaborate code at the beginning, and towards the end there will be more restricted code.
This is because of the script goes on it gets more gory/ violent. The language used in
the movie shall be quite modern language (before Tik Tok gen z language, it will be like
2000s or 1990s language) to attract the target audience. This will happen because
everyone who is in the target audience ages, they have all lived through the 2000s
meaning everyone can understand that language. This will therefore make the script and
the movie as a whole more entertaining to watch and easier to understand.
NARRATIVE STRUCTURE
The movie shall be a linear script because it’s a movie that will be in chronological order.
It does have a sort of slot because the script must be only 6-10 pages or 6-10 minutes
long, that is also multi-stranded because there will be multiple POV’s of the movie like
when the separate into pairs/ get killed, etc. there will be a 3-act structure. The first act
shall be about finding the Ouija Board and not signing off properly. The second act shall
be about the ghosts/spirits going around killing the group. And the third act will be about
getting out and signing off properly on the Ouija board.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
Jenny (protagonist).
16 years old
American
Lives in Florida

Has no idea there is Ouija Board in the grandma’s house and that the house is haunted.
One of the 3 who escapes.
Chris (the one who doesn’t like anyone and is annoying at first but then turns to be ok)
the only other person who will survive (along with Jenny)
No one likes him at first because he’s difficult and annoying then as the movie goes on
becomes a decent person.
Kate’s twin brother
African American
17 years old
Lives in Florida
Only there because Kate must watch him as punishment for him (got in a fight with his
mother so she wanted him out of the house, so Kate forced him to join the others at
Jenny’s grandma’s house
Selfish at first and tries to leave them.
Is forced/ persuaded to stay.
Then become selfless and wants to not be the only one who survives.

Mood board for script
ANGLE OF ARTICLE
The target audience for the movie signing off is Male and Female from late teens to
early 30. In the movie I have decided to make the all the character late teen age and
older to attract that target audience and to have the less important spirits to be a black
shadow like figure with a faint grey glow to make the movie be scarier (at that part) to
entice that target audience. There will not be any bias.
The only Agenda/message there will be from Signing Off is to not tamper or mess with
anything that has a bad reputation. For example, everyone says to not mess with a Ouija
Board because you don’t know what could happen.
I personally believe that the script will not be seen as abusive because there is nothing
about the main Ghost (Bill) being horrible to the grandma there is just the assumption
made because he was bad to her, there is also nothing explained about that which
keeps the possibility of being seen as abusive locked away because there not being any
proper evidence of anything. I have also kept areas that can be interpreted as negative
out of the script or very brief to fit into Film4’s ethos.
FORMAT & LAYOUT CONVENTIONS
To script write my movie signing off for UK standards I need to use a certain font (12-point
Courier) and margin (left and right margin (inch – 2 inch)). I shall only use A4 paper nothing
needs to be fancy about the paper. The script shall be printed on individual pages (no two-sided
paper).
Another formatting that it used in the script is things like brackets, these are used to tell the actors
and everyone else reading the script that the character does a specific action of thing at that point
of the sentence. Capital letters that are in the script are used for transitions and names.
The reason as to why the script is formatted this way is so that the whole script will fit into UK
standards in scripts so that the script could then be approved not just be Film4 productions but
also BBFC which would then allow to script to be made into a movie with three different types of
posters to advertise the movie.
TYPEFACE
the standard typeface for uk film scripts is 12 point Courier
TARGET AUDIENCE
Unit 22: Task Two
Generate ideas and plan the script for a media product, in response to a client brief.
The primary audience is men and women from the ages 16 to early 30s. and the secondary
audience will be anyone else who finds out about the movie and want to/ watched it. One way I
am targeting the early 30s/ the older ages of the target audience is that I have made the characters
fit into that stereotypical friend group in a horror movie. For example, Brad is the Dumb Jock,
Kate is the nerd, Chris is the annoying one no one likes, and Gavin and Stacy and the couple with
one of them dying which is more the older generation of horror movies (late 80s, 90s, 2000s).
And another way I am attracting the target audience (early teens onward) is that the characters are
around the same ages as them. So, there will also be some sensory on language (the harsh words)
but not on smaller less harsh words like crap or damn, etc. To target the late teens/ the younger
ages of the target audience is by having new ideas, like why they want to use the Ouija Board etc.
I have also used language that they are familiar with. For example, siblings, parents and other
relatives use, the teenagers also grew up using that language also.
