Gallstones, another name for gallbladder stones, are solid objects that develop in the
gallbladder, a little pear-shaped organ underneath the liver. The primary purpose of the
gallbladder is to store bile, a substance created by the liver that aids in fat digestion.
When necessary, bile is discharged from the gallbladder into the small intestine to help in
digestion. Gallstones are often composed of calcium salts, bile pigments, and cholesterol.
They come in a variety of sizes, from the size of a golf ball to a grain of sand. When the
constituents of bile are out of balance, they can crystallize and form solid particles,
leading to the development of gallstones.
