1. How effective is the
combination of your main
product and ancillary texts?
Sam Howlett
2. Ancillary texts
• Our media product was split into three separate texts, which are as
follows; music video, magazine advert and a digipak.
• Music videos are used by record companies in order to brand and
market an artist or group through more than just their music.
• Digipaks give the brand an identity whereby synonymous texts
throughout link to the band or artist.
• The magazine advert is a mass outreach whereby they can target
more than just their target market but everyone who buys the
magazine
3. Music video
• The theme of our music video predominantly consists of a doctor, however
not just the generic doctor you visit when you're ill. We manipulated the
term doctor into different ways such as ‘Doctor of Love’ and ‘Doctor of
Sport’ in order to play with the lyrics in the music video however keep
them relevant.
• The music video is perhaps the stand out text, with it not being as similar
to the digipak and magazine advert as they are to each other.
• The digipak and magazine advert very much focused on the doctor aspect
of the music video whereas the music video would then explore other
methods of doctoring.
• This was intentional as it meant we would not give too much away and the
video would still hold surprised of which then audience would not expect.
4. Digipak theme
• The theme of our digipak was very much a doctor theme, whereby
the background consisted of pills.
• This made it recognisable for the audience and easy for them to
identify just what the song and music video would be all about.
• We split up the panels for our digipak in a way that they would link
however at the same time all have their own meanings and stories
behind them.
• This was effective as it gave an idea of what the music video was
going to be about without giving away too much information.
5. As you can see, the
background is an image of
pills, representing the doctor
side of our product. This is
effective as is connects the
digipak to the music video
itself through the narrative
The text is very bold and
stands out the most of all.
This is because it is the most
important text, being the
name of the band and the
song title. We chose this font
in order to link back to the
title of the song, and in
particular the ‘worm’ as it
seemed slivery and curly.
Here we can clearly see an image of
the main character in our music
video. It is very effective to display
this and shows the audience exactly
who is going to be in he music video
and may influence them into
watching and listening
In the other corners you can see
polaroid images of different sections
of the music video. This is extremely
effective when taking into account
the narrative of the video and shows
a clear relationship between the
video and the digipak itself.
The layout we tried to keep
very simple yet effective. With
the use of polaroid's, we were
able to give out the narrative
of our music video without
giving out too much
The Digipak
6. Magazine advert
• The theme of our magazine advert was very similar to our digipak as
we used the exact same background, being pills.
• We also kept the colour scheme identical in order, being green, black
and white in to maintain continuity throughout our texts.
• We split the main character into two, almost as if to demonstrate an
alter ego whereby he has multiple personalities.
• This was effective as it enabled the audience to understand where the
music video would take them in terms of him being multiple
characters all at once and undergoing separate activities.
7. The background is identical to
that of the digipak in order to
create a cross bridge between
the two texts. This is effective as
we can keep the continuity
throughout all of our texts and
keep the audience all on the
same level. For the same reason
we also used the same font and
colour scheme.
There is a clear relationship
between this advert and
the music video which is
shown through the split
personnel. This links to the
narrative of the music
video as the character is a
doctor of many aspects,
two of which are shown
within the image.
Here is where we
had a split image of
two different
personalities of the
doctor. This was
effective as it linked
back to our music
video narrative and
the photos on our
digipak.
Once again we used the same
font as on the digipak to
maintain continuity. This
shows a clear link between
the digipak and the magazine
advert
The Magazine Advert
8. Feedback on the Digipak and Magazine Advert
When undergoing feedback from our piers, we quickly understood that our font
was the perfect choice and that they could instantly understand the reason for
our decision. They all agreed that the font clearly represented the title of the
song and amplified the meaning of ‘Dr Worm’. Their one critique however was
that they liked the font, however they found it hard to read on the green
background and so due to this we had to make some minor changes.
We also showed the whole class our initial digipak and they
were very suggestive as to how we could improve. We ended up
altering the layout of our digipak and changing it so we used
polaroid images rather than just text on a green pills
background. They said that is was very ‘too samey’, and that we
should have some variety between the sides within the digipak.
9. What is the purpose?
• The overall purpose of these texts is to sell the artist and give them a
brand.
• They all link to each other in order to keep a sense of continuity and
for the sake of the audience, in order to maintain an idea of what the
music video will consist of
• This is effective as it gives multiple branches for people to connect to
that aren't all the same however all link together in order to meet at
the final media product, being the music video.
10. Summary
• Overall, I believe that the combination of all of my ancillary texts was
extremely effective. The reason for this is that it gave the audience an
idea of what to expect however didn’t give too much away that they
knew exactly what was planned.
• Additionally, I feel that the combination allowed us to be more
creative with our work and so in the bigger picture it was also
effective. Predominantly, it helped us to keep the consistency
throughout each text and made sure we kept to what we wanted to
do rather than going off on a tangent that did not fit with the
narrative.
