EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Motivation is a theoretical construct used to explain behavior. It
represents the reasons for people actions, desires, and needs. The aim
to what type of motivation does the person have. It is been done with
the students of age groups from 18-25 years. The survey method used
to calculate this type of McClelland’s Human Motivation Theory. Under
this theory we can calculate.
Motivation refers to forces that affect his/her direction, intensity and
persistence of voluntaries behavior motivated, student willing to
expert a particular.
The scope of this research has been made to the 1st
year PGDM
students by using McClelland’s Human Theory which help me to know
whether they have power motivation or affiliation motivation or
achievement motivation.
5
INTRODUCTION
Motivation as the processes that account for an individual’s intensity,
direction and persistence of effort toward attaining a goal. Although
general motivation is concerned with effort toward attaining goal; we
will narrow the focus to organizational goals in order to reflect our
singular interest in work-related behavior.
Motivation is essentially about commitment to doing something. In the
context of a business, motivation can be said to be about ‘the will to
work’. Motivation can come from the enjoyment of work itself and/or
from the desire to achieve certain goals.
Motivation is a theoretical construct used to explain behavior. It
represents for people’s action, desires, and needs. Motivation can also
be defined as one’s direction to behavior or what causes a person to
want to repeat a behavior and vice versa.
THEORY OF NEED:-
In the early 1940s, Abraham Maslow created his theory of needs, Add
to my Personal Learning Plan The identified the basic needs that human
beings have in order of the their importance; physiological needs,
safety needs and needs for belonging, self-esteem and self
actualization.
6
Later David McClelland built on this work in 1961 in his book “THE
ACHIEVING SOCIETY”. He identified three motivators that he believed
we all have a need for achievement, a need for affiliation and a need
for power. People will have different characteristics depending on their
dominant motivator.
McClelland says that regardless of our gender, culture or age. We all
have three motivating drivers and one of these will be our dominant
7
motivating driver. This dominant motivator is largely dependent on our
culture and life.
These characteristics are as follows:-
ACHIEVEMENT
 Has a strong need to set and accomplish challenging goals.
 Takes calculated risks ro accomplish their goals.
 Likes to receive regular feedback on their progess and
achievements.
 Often likes to work alone.
AFFILIATION
 Wants to belong to the group.
 Wants to be liked and will often go along with whatever the
rest of the group want to do.
 Favour collaboration over competition.
 Doesn’t like high risk or uncertainty.
POWER
 Want to controls and influence others.
 Likes to win arguments.
 Enjoys competition and winning
8
 Enjoys status and recognition.
