• Definition
“ It is the transfer of information through the use of
body language including eye contact, facial
expressions, gestures an more.”
• Example: “smile” –it shows the friendliness,
acceptance, openness.
• Everyone uses non-verbal communication all the
time.
• It supports the verbal communication.
• It helps in conveying feelings, showing intentions and
indicates a desired action.
• It gives valuable information about a situation.
4. How Body Language Communicates?
• Body language is the way someone situates their
body depending on the situation, the environment and
how they are feeling.
• Example;
• Someone might cross their arms if they are feeling
angry or nervous.
5. How Appearance Communicates?
• Appearance is the way someone dresses up, grooms
and presents oneself physically and communicates
some meaning.
• In interpersonal communication appearance of the
participants establishes their social identity.
• Example;
• Pakistanis dress up in shalwar kameez depicting their
culture and values.
6. How Silence Communicates?
• Silence is a very powerful form of communication.
• The context of the situation defines the power and
message of silence.
• Example;
• One may remain silent to show respect to the other
person.
7. How Time Communicates?
• The use of time in non-verbal communication is
known as chronemics.
• The use of time illustrates the speed of speech in a
non-verbal communication.
• It tells how long the other people are willing to listen.
• Example;
• One continued to wait for the other person expressing
some affection and concern.
8. How Space Communicates?
• Creating or closing space between yourself and the
people around you also convey some message.
• It expresses the comfort level, the importance of
conversation, your desire to support or connect with
others.
• Example;
• One might stand two feet away from a newly
appointed manager to show respect.
