The magazine represents young female adolescents aged 16-18 through the models used. It also represents youth more generally through the topics covered like films targeted towards that age group. The magazine represents various ethnicities through the diverse models used, who have backgrounds including Jamaican, Italian, Indian, and English. However, it lacks representation of males. It also represents those who experienced the 1980s through its subtle use of 80s styles and influences.
1. 2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
The media plays a huge part in representing particular social
groups, and the issue of representation refers to the portrayal of
people, this regards topics involving gender, ethnicity and age etc.
Young people are often stereotypically represented as, and associated with:
2. 2. How Does Your Media Product Represent Particular Social Groups?
The magazine represents young
female adolescents, as the models
matched characteristics of this
social group, and the age range was
16-18.
Yet also the magazine perhaps
represents youth in general due to
the contents as I included subjects
that portrays stereotypical activities
that young people would be
interested in, for example films
such as ‘If I stay’ staring Jamie
Blackley, and Skin’s star Hannah
Murray.

The language that I have used is formal and elaborate,
therefore matching linguistics of those in a higher class/
social group.Yet, the language used by the artists is formal
and simplistic. This represents the artists’ standard English
dialect which also conveys them as serious about their
music career.
The costumes the models wore were fairly neutral, in that
they weren’t wearing overly feminine or masculine typed
clothing.Therefore I wasn’t portraying females as
stereotypically feminine, but in way they could express
themselves. Also, one of the models was wearing a
hoodie, this is conventionally used to represent young
people.
I would say that the band members portray a less
hedonistic representation, but are presented as more
genuine and quirky, this because of their playful and
positive body language. This represents the relaxed and
amiable persona of youth.

Ethnicity is most significantly
represented through the use of
make-up and hair (mise-en-scene).
For instance in the image above, the
model’s make-up uses traditional
styles of the Indian culture, i.e the
eye liner. Also, in the image on the
left, the model on the right had
typical Jamaican styled hair.
In terms of representation of ethnicity, the models I used
represented different cultures.This included Jamaican,
Italian, Indian and English. This diversity meant that my
media product can represent a variety of social
background.Although the models had different ethnicity
they all have a British nationality.

However, Forgo does have a lack
of representation of males.This
wasn’t entirely intentional, but I
wanted to use female models for
the magazine.This is partially
because many indie alternative
magazines tend to use male
models; therefore I wanted to
represent female artists. Although
the magazine does refer to male
artists.

For the magazine I decided to represent
80s music because many current bands,
especially alternative bands and artists such
as Anne Marie are influenced by 80s music,
and a lot of 80s fashion trends have come
back into fashion. Therefore I subtle used
the 80s style for my final magazine. For
example the main image uses a variety of
colour, likewise to the 80s style. As a result
the magazine further represents the older
generation of those who experienced the
1980s.
7. 2. How Does Your Media Product Represent Particular Social Groups?
A limitation of my magazine is that it may not
represent all social groups (older generations,
for example), however through my use of
images, language and fonts it has allowed me
to appeal to not only the female adolescents
social groups but teenagers as well.As they
can use the magazine for their own needs and
gratification.
Overall, my magazine (Forgo) largely and
positively represents young people.
