2. Camera Shots/Angles
Medium shot – Gives evidence to
the singers facial expressions, body
language and action. In addition to
this, the shot enables the viewer to
see the headline and the shows
logo.
Two shot – shows the layout of the chat
show. The TV is central so it draws the
viewers attention to it once it’s on.
Close up – Shows Alex performing by
singing into the mic
Depth of field – Shows the drummer
and the singer performing together.
Depth of field highlights the distance
between them in the shot as well as
Alex being in focus. This suggests that
he’s more well known than the others.
Low angle – Highlights that Rian is on
a platform which is higher than the
camera.
Extreme Long shot – Establishes that
the band are performing on a talk
show. Establishes the set and the fact
that they’re on platforms.
3. Camera Movement
• Zoom: From a long shot to a medium shot, the camera zooms into
Alex as he sings. This highlights his body language and facial
expression
• Zoom: Long shot to a medium shot
• Arc Shot: captures Rian drumming and highlights the member of the
band.
4. Settings & Props
• This video is primarily shot in the studio where Alex is being
interviewed.
• They use the following props: instruments (they play them as a small
performance narrative), microphone (for Alex to sing in), mug (placed
on the table for Alex), pen and pencil (for the classroom scene; looks
like he’s working) and a plant pot (which Alex gets hit with).
5. Costume, Hair & Makeup
• The mother – grey and white spotted dress. Grey has the connotations of
knowledge and wisdom which suits the mother figure. In addition to this, she’s
wearing a white cardigan. The colour white has the connotations of understating
and faith. Her hair is partly tied up with the other half down and slightly curled at
the bottom. Furthermore, she has blonde hair with brown roots which implies to
the audience that she dyes her hair.
• The father – Similar coloured clothes to the mother. He’s wearing grey pants and
brown shoes. Brown has the connotations of reliability and material security. His
jumper has diamonds on it which is the conventional jumper for older men.
Moreover, his hair is combed into a centre parting and is a brown colour.
However, his moustache is a grey colour highlighting, like his wife, he dyes his
hair.
• The host – The host is wearing a smart black pencil skirt and a black and white
shirt. This tells the audience that she’s professional due to the connotations of
black which are power, elegance and formality. In addition to this, her hair is in a
middle parting with fringe brushed to the side. Moreover, her hair is curly which
makes her look presentable. Her makeup is quite natural apart from her black eye
shadow which links with her outfit and her cheeks which are pink from blusher.
6. • The teacher – white shirt which is open to imply that she’s
promiscuous, a black dress, black tights and short heeled shoes to
highlight that she’s professional. Her hair is tied back which is also a
professional look, however, the small side bits of hair give her a more
free/calm look.
Guests on the Show Shots
• Alex – Black jeans, a grey Glamour Kills t-shirt and a sleeveless black
hoodie. In addition to this his hair is styled
• Jack – plain grey t-shirt
• Rian – black Glamour Kills t-shirt and black jeans.
• Zack – striped black and white sleeveless t-shirt.
The outfits the bands are wearing are more casual when they’re
portrayed as guests on the show compared to when they’re
performing on the show.
7. Performance Shots
• Alex – He’s wearing a yellow and black plaid shirt which connotes
danger and death which suit the genre of music. He’s also wearing a
black leather jacket; this also suits the genre and connotes mystery.
• Jack – Black dress shirt (this connotes formality) and orange pants
(which represent enthusiasm, which is what the guitarist is known
for)
• Rian – yellow shirt (which connotes joy and caution. In addition to
this, it matches the surrounding set) and black jeans
• Zack – black jeans
8. Lighting & Colour
• Bright high key lighting as the video is studio based and would
therefore be well lit.
• Furthermore, the song is very upbeat and this is portrayed through
the use of high key lighting.
• The colours are mainly yellow and orange as they are the colours of
the show. Yellow connotes happiness and joy and orange connotes
enthusiasm and attraction. The connotation of attraction links to the
song as it’s about just that.
9. Editing & Editing Techniques
• Fast paced editing when the song starts to highlight the fast paced
song.
• Prior to that, however, the editing is a normal pace. The camera stays
on the host of the show until Alex comes on.
10. Sound
• The sound is mostly non-diegetic sound as it’s the song.
• However on some shots the music could be considered as diegetic as
they’re performing, which the audience would be able to hear in the
studio.
• There are sections of diegetic sound, mostly at the beginning which
creates the story and establishes the scene.
11. Representation & Genre
• Genre: Pop-punk
• combines components of punk rock with pop music.
• Typically loud guitars, fast punk tempos and chord changes.
• Pop-influenced melodies and lyrical themes
• Representation:
• Alex’s character is represented as a ladies man as he’s after the school teacher.
• His band mates characters are represented as shy guys which is evident when
there’s a mid shot of the three with shy body language.
• However, when they’re performing they’re incredibly confident and clearly
enjoying performing.
12. Narrative
This video is narrative based. It’s set up as a “Jeremy Kyle” style show and
depicts Alex, the lead singer, as the guest on the show. The segment is
“people who are involved in secret relationships” and the audience are told
that he’s being having a secret affair with his teacher.
The narrative starts out by introducing Alex and letting the audience know
why he’s there. It then goes on to show the audience his life with the
teacher. It starts in home room, then moves to detention and then to band
practice where she’s distracting him.
After this, it goes back to studio shots where the interviewer brings out his
family and band mates where they all argue, rendering it in a fight.
This media text is a closed narrative as Alex gets the teacher in the end and
they walk off the set together.
