INTRODUCTION
Benchmarking in the business context
involves taking measurements of a
corporate landscape whose dimensions
will probably not be immediately
apparent. To be successful, it requires a
combination of solid detective work,
honest self-examination and the will to
innovate.
FOUR TYPES OF BENCHMARKING
Internal
The process of comparing one particular operation within your
organization with another. Success in this area is a matter of "the left
hand knowing what the right hand is doing." Internal benchmarking
is by far the easiest, both to research and to implement. Productivity
improvement achieved in this type is usually about 10 percent.
Competitive
The process of comparing an operation with that of your direct
competitors. For obvious reasons, this is the most difficult type of
benchmarking to carry out successfully, and legal considerations
must always be kept in mind. Productivity improvement achieved in
this type is usually about 20 percent.
Functional-
The process of comparing an operation with that of similar ones within
the broad range of your industry (e.g., copper mining techniques
compared with coal mining techniques). Functional benchmarking is
relatively easy to research and implement. Productivity improvement
achieved in this type may be 35 percent or better.
Generic-
The process of comparing operations from unrelated industries (i.e.,
ones often used by a wide variety of industries). An example would be
a film library using the warehousing techniques of another industry to
store more efficiently its catalogue of old movies. The advantage of
this type is that the problems of competition do not apply, increasing
the access to information and reducing the possibility of legal
problems. Productivity improvement achieved in this type may be 35
percent or better.
DIVERSIFICATION OF PRODUCTS
• Pizza Hut is always adding something new to their menu,
trying to reach new markets. For example, in 1992 the
famous buffet was launched in Pizza Hut restaurants
worldwide. They were trying to offer many different
food items for customers who didn't necessarily want
pizza.
• They all try to come up with some newer, bigger, better,
pizza for a low price. Offering special promotions and
new pizza variations are popular today as well. For
example, chicken is now a common topping found on
pizzas.
How to implement in our
college?
Our college can introduce variety of courses to
lure more number of students that can increase
the admission rate in the college.
For example: introducing more number of
branches in b-tech course that matches the
students interest.
TRAINING PROVISION
All the employees at Pizza Hut’ back-of-
the-house i.e. the kitchen assistants are
trained accordingly. They are given extra
classes in order to meet the quality
standards set by Pizza Hut around the
world. This strategy is important in order
to satisfy the CHAMPS.
How to implement in our
college?
If the staff is provided with trainings and
workshops, this could enhance the
quality of teaching and in turn leading
to the better shaping of the future of
the students.
SUPERVISION PROVIDED BY QUALITY
MANAGEMENT STAFF
Different quality management staff is also
there at Pizza Hut . The shift managers have
the task to observe whether the quality
standards are met or not . The department
has the task to implement quality standards
and know whether they are achieved or not.
How to implement in our
college?
Our college should have committee
that would supervise the whole
management process taking place in the
college and would keep an eye on each
activity .
NEW TECHNOLOGY TRENDS
FOLLOWED
Due to new technology there are new ways
of marketing like internet; telemarketing and
the organization can advertise their products
with much more faster pace. Computer based
customer data that is MIS (managing
information system) helps in collecting
customer data, daily transactions, future
forecasting and decision making. New
vehicles will make their service more
efficient.
How to implement in our college?
Our college should advertise themselves with
the help of new technology trends so that
more number of people can gain access to the
information regarding the college.
Through the advertisements in newspapers ,
with the help of internet or organising college
fests at larger scale so that people come to
know about our college.

Like pizza hut, our college should also
implement the P.E.A.R.L
P : Passion- for excelling in all the fields.
E: Execute –all the necessary conditions
needed to provide students with the BEST.
A : Accountable-for the growth and popularity
of the college.
R : Recognize- the talent of others
L:Listen- listen to the suggestions of others and
implement them.
• By this task , we measured the performance ,
services and management of our college
against the organisations like PIZZA HUT that
are known to be leaders in one or more
aspects of operations.
• Additionally , we identified the areas ,
systems or processes for improvement in our
college.
