ConocoPhillips – DCS Replacement Project – Seal Sands
Senior Instrument Engineer
Continuation of DCS Replacement Project working directly for ConocoPhillips, rather than
via 3rd
party ABB.
Current work includes generation/final checks/production of folders and mitigation of Pre-
cutover and Hot-cutover procedures to enable Pre and Hot-Cutover of live plant. Production
of Pre functional tests and specific procedures for the more complex loop cutovers.
Undertook Co-ordination role for Hot-Cutover of Stabilisation, NGL and Utilities, organising
cutover sequencing and supervising Technicians to ensure smooth safe signal cutovers.
Cutover completed to schedule with no plant downtime.

ConocoPhillips – DCS Replacement Project – Seal Sands
Senior Instrument Engineer
Working for client, ConocoPhillips, based at Teesside site office.
Liaison with Project Design Consultants (ABB) to establish design content/requirement and
extensive checking / approval for issue of Construction Package and SOW for different area’s
and stages of the Control System Replacement Project. Construction Package was primarily
of Instrument/Electrical content but additional work included tying into existing Fibre Optic
network, update of HSSD systems and accommodation of 3rd
party interface systems into the
new DCS. Support at Installation stages and development of pre cut-over/SAT documentation
and subsequent SAT / hot cut-over / commissioning.
Similar checking / approval role for DCS Vendor, Emerson and the DeltaV system
documentation. Helped the development of Emerson DDS/FDS etc by attending Alarm
Rationalisation, Criticality, Complex loop review etc site meetings to fully determine existing
RS3 system content and define exact requirement for DeltaV. Attended HFAT’s at Emerson
Leicester to fully check Cabinets hardware and full I/O simulations. Raised register for any
faults (ILS) and subsequently re-checked cabinets to ensure faults had been rectified prior to
delivery to site.

EDF Energy – Project Revolution – Hole House
Instrument Engineer
Interim Operation and Debrining Stage of Project Revolution.
Development of Instrumentation content/ requirement for different stages of Debrining /
Storage on existing cavities which were being developed. Supervised Design documentation
from comment to construction issues and attended associated HFAT/ SAT’s for Control and

give guidance, culminating with pre-commissioning assistance and general trouble shooting.
Harouge Oil Operations – Gas Utilisation Project – Libya
Lead Instrument Engineer
Conceptual Study and Costing exercise for Gas Utilisation Project for Amal and Ghani Oil
Stations in Libya.
Initial site survey at Libyan Oil Fields and the subsequent production of Site Survey Report
and Basis of Design Document.
Development of full instrumentation requirement to enable overall + or – 30% Cost Estimate
and Close Out Report detailing recommendations / options / cost benefit analysis etc.
Instrument requirement was determined / specified with reference to current relevant
standards and undertaking of extensive client / vendor liaison to define Monitoring, ESD and
Fire and Gas system architecture and vendor package requirements. Final requirements were
determined after undertaking PID, HSE & Layout reviews, utility requirements, sparing
philosophy and operation / control philosophies.
Deliverables included Equipment Specifications, Site Survey and Basis of Design Reports,
Control System Architectural Drawings, Block Diagrams, preferred vendor schedule, I/O
Proposal Documentation, + or – 30% cost estimate and Close Out Report. Final Presentation
to client and site personnel and response to any technical questions regarding instrument
proposals. Subsequent development of FEED stage to an overall + or – 10% cost and
specifications, documentation to enable EPC tender bids to be submitted.
Milford Energy Cogen Project - Instrument Engineer
Review of vendor supplied packages to produce documentation required to provide a smooth
installation and tie-in with existing systems where applicable.
Site and Factory visits to determine content of equipment and its suitability for
refurbishment/re-use and subsequent ordering specification should replacements be required.
Attendance for preFAT and FAT’s for associated project control systems/equipment. User
Requirement Specifications produced to supplement requisition documentation.
Oversee production of instrument design documentation for project.
Liaison with Site Installation Contractor, answering queries regarding work package content
and giving guidance on equipment specifications/standards etc.
Site commissioning assistance for vendor related packages, PCS (Delta V) F&G (SIS) and
ESD (Hima) systems. Generation of Modpacks to capture changes from initial concept and
subsequent FAT & SAT.
Attendance of HAZOPs, HAZIDs, PID reviews throughout project lifespan.
Close liaison with respective vendors to develop / specify / install control system architecture
including Fibre Optic network, and associated Patch panels, multiplexers etc. Included
provision for tie-ins with vendor packages (Modbus, Profibus) and development of hardware
and software I/O requirements.
Introduction of CCTV system after developing a User Requirement Specification and analysis
of prospective suppliers. Undertook full control from initial development to final successful
installation and commissioning.
Produced start up / commissioning procedures along with pre-commissioning /
commissioning test sheets and organised progress tracking for review meetings etc. Produced
Trip Test Method datasheets and I.S calculations.
National Grid - New Build Compressor Station - Instrument Engineer
Responsible for preparation and subsequent checking / approval of Instrument Documents.
Review of Vendor supplied packages to ensure National Grid Standards were adhered to and
flag up any problems.
Production of estimates to include with PCN’s to capture requirement for Control
Centralisation and associated additional documentation for Vendor signals.
Production of User Requirement Specifications, Instrument Data Sheets and Functional
Design Specifications. Fire and Gas Documentation produced ( typically Block Cabling,
Terminations, Locations, Loops ) with reference to Cause and Effects Documents and liaison
with both Equipment and Control panel Vendors.

3. Preparation of relevant Instrument Schedules etc on Access Database with continual updating
as Project remit evolved.
Shell - BBL Project - Instrument Engineer
Responsible for the preparation of all Instrument Documentation from preliminary /comment
stage through to Construction issue.
Starting from development of preliminary PID’s and Access Instrument Database following
on with the production of Block Connection Diagrams, Termination Diagrams,
Location/Cable Routing Drawings, Transit Layouts, Tray work Construction Drawings, Cable
and Gland Schedules, Material Schedules, Label Schedules, Pneumatic and Process Hook-up
drawings and Loop Diagrams particular to each control system. Produced Instrument Data
Sheets for enquiry and procurement of all non vendor supplied Instrumentation.
Liaised closely on Vendor supplied packages to ensure they met the Shell standards and
produced all documents to tie into the Control System. Undertook several trips to Holland to
monitor vendor equipment progress and produce current snag lists etc
Produced Fire and Gas Package from clients mapping study and liaised regarding cause and
effect production and specialised mounting brackets.
Helped the commissioning team put together Job Packs and answered any Instrumentation
related queries.
