Technique Review
 What are the two tones we know?
 How are they played?
 Let’s practice them one at a time on a question/answer
game
 What question should we ask?
Stepping Pattern
 When you are on the frame drum, you will stand and
step to the music
 Our pattern goes like this:
 RIGHT – TOGETHER – LEFT - TOGETHER
Question and Answer
 A common theme in African traditional music is question
and answer
 We have done this a lot with “What’s your name?”
 We are going to combine open and closed tones with
this question and answer
 I’ll play BASS-OPEN-OPEN in two beats
 One student will play a two-beat answer combining BASS
and OPEN tones
 Let’s practice a few times, then go through our circle
 If you’re playing a tubano, you are sitting
 Remember: if you’re playing a frame drum, you are
standing and stepping!

  • 2. What Are We Learning Today?  By the end of today’s class, you will…  …confidently create question and answer echoes using open and bass tones  …choose an instrument to play for our ensemble  …feel great about our quiz next class!
  • 3. Technique Review  What are the two tones we know?  How are they played?  Let’s practice them one at a time on a question/answer game  What question should we ask?
  • 4. Stepping Pattern  When you are on the frame drum, you will stand and step to the music  Our pattern goes like this:  RIGHT – TOGETHER – LEFT - TOGETHER
  • 5. Question and Answer  A common theme in African traditional music is question and answer  We have done this a lot with “What’s your name?”  We are going to combine open and closed tones with this question and answer  I’ll play BASS-OPEN-OPEN in two beats  One student will play a two-beat answer combining BASS and OPEN tones  Let’s practice a few times, then go through our circle  If you’re playing a tubano, you are sitting  Remember: if you’re playing a frame drum, you are standing and stepping!
