2. WHAT ARE WE LEARNING TODAY?
 By the end of today’s class, you will begin to work
on arranging your themes in invention order.
 Benchmarks: 6.1.1.3.1, 6.1.2.3.1, 6.2.1.3.1

3. HOMEWORK REINFORCEMENT
 Let’s practice the skills of sequencing and inverting,
shall we?

4. SEQUENCING
 Sequencing is transposing all the pitches of a
theme by a fixed interval

5. INVERSION
 Inversion is changing the direction of the notes of a
theme (down goes up, up goes down)

6. INVERTED SEQUENCES
 You can combine these techniques by inverting a
sequence

7. ARRANGING THEMES
 Remember, our invention order must go:
 Exposition
 Development
 Recapitulation
 Our Exposition will be four measures long
 It will contain a statement of the theme in the right hand
(treble clef)
 Then it will contain a statement of the theme in the left
hand (bass clef)

8. ARRANGING THEMES
 Our Development section will be sixteen measures
long
 It will contain four variations
 Each variation will take place in both hands, one after
the other
 Our Recapitulation will be five measures long
 It will contain the theme in the left hand (bass clef)
 Then it will contain the theme in the right hand (treble
clef)
 It will end with a tonic chord (C major or A minor)

and variations throughout your final work space
