2. WHAT ARE WE LEARNING TODAY?
 By the end of today’s class, you will know how to
create counterpoint for your two-part invention.
 Benchmarks: 6.1.1.3.1, 6.1.2.3.1, 6.2.1.3.1

3. CREATING COUNTERPOINT
 The easiest thing you can do to create counterpoint
is to emphasize consonance
 Consonances: unisons, 3rds, 4ths, 5ths, 6ths, and
octaves
 Use fewer dissonances
 2nds and 7ths
 Utilize different rhythms in the non-theme/variation
measures
 Half notes work great (and are easy)
 Eighth notes provide a lot of interest

4. CREATING COUNTERPOINT
 Creating counterpoint requires knowing all of our
intervals
 Let’s review them:
 Count the steps from one note to the other
 The starting note counts as 1—don’t forget!
