2. ANIMAL LOVING IN SPAIN
The number of both cats and dogs per household is higher than the number of
children, which sits at 1.32 per woman of fertile age.
GALICIA
The Galician Parliament has given the green light to the new Law of Protection and
Welfare of Companion Animals (The Xunta excludes bulls and horses).
The new Galician Law prohibits:
The use of wild animals in circuses
The exhibition of species in shop windows
The sacrifice of specimens in temporary shelters
It typifies a serious violation of animal abuse not only in its representation as
violence, but also for subjecting animals to questionable hygienic and sanitary
conditions
REASONS TO ADOPT AN ANIMAL
When you buy an animal from a pet store, you’re supporting cruel puppy mills
It’ll cost you less (shelters and rescue groups often include vaccinations, microchipping, and
spaying or neutering in the adoption fee)
You will be rewarded with expressions of gratitude. You'll get a great animal
You'll save a life
Spain´s 46 million inhabitants own 20 million pets.
The most popular pet is birds: a total of 5.32 million feathered friends share
their homes with humans.
Dogs make up 22% of the total number of pets: Yorkshire terriers are the
most common followed by German shepherds.
Cat-lovers are fairly prolific in Spain, although only about half as many pets
are feline: nearly 2.3 million. They are smaller, cheaper and easier to
maintain.
Fish in tanks and ponds are even more popular than cats, with just under
four million on the national census.
In the category of 'other pets' (totaling 2.03 million) everything from reptiles
(tortoises, iguanas and snakes) through to ferrets, who are becoming more
popular, via hamsters, gerbils and turtles, who are on the decline, are
included.
