Cartoon Clash: Around the World
March-May 2019
Main area of activity:
I am looking to focus mainly on my cut scene and larger more complex animations than the actual
game itself. I really want everything that comes before the game from the music, to the loading
screens, to set the scene of how this game is going to be. I want to spend a good amount of time
getting to know how to animate on a bigger scale. I also think it will be good to spend some time
learning how to get the old-school style I have chosen for the cut scene, and turn it into the more
pixelated style. I would like to spend most time on the cut scene because I think it is the best way
to show my animation skills and will let me achieve the highest grade possible. I also think that it is
one of the most important parts of a game, especially if I am only showing the start-up of the
game, as it sets the story and gets the players intrigued and is supposed to let them get immersed
in the gaming experience.
Rationale:
I have learnt a bit of animation before during this year, from my Irn-Bru project and the game
design project. From doing those projects I have learnt a lot about what techniques work best for
certain parts of a game. I have also learnt a lot about character design and how to use different
layers to achieve the best results possible for my character movement. I also have some
experience in illustrator from home and a little bit of character design practice I did after I
completed my magazine project. I chose to make a game because I am most interested in
animation and a game is the best way for me to apply animation to a product. I want to do
animation in university and hopefully get a job doing it in the future.
Project Concept:
My project will be a video game. It will have 4 main features to it. Overall my project is a fighting 1
on 1, PvP game, which will have a very specific 1930s art style and a cut scene. I will use 2D
animation in this style combined with pixel art, to make a game where these characters’ travel
across a rotating globe to different parts of the world and fight in those locations. My game will also
include a cut scene which will be in the same 1930s style to set the story of the game. This will
then lead to a small tutorial to show how the game is played. I will need to research a lot into how
to create effective animation in a quick time and also how to draw 1930s cartoon characters. I will
also have to look into music creation if I want to make my own jazz inspired tracks, on garage
band for example. I will also have to look at previous films in the style of Felix Colgrave who is an
animator.
How will the project be evaluated and reviewed:
To evaluate my work, I will look into existing products and see how their work compares to mine. I
will have to look at some animations and a few existing games to make sure I have got the style
correct or to a good standard. I will conduct a production reflection where I speak about how I
created certain types of the product and then in my evaluation I will write about what worked well in
a certain part and what could be improved. I will analyse my work by each one of the sections. I
will try and look at the outcomes this game could have on the public if it were real and if my
audience would enjoy my finished product. This will help me develop my work during the rest of
college and my career as it will allow me to pick out my strong points but more importantly my
weak points, allowing me to improve as I progress into the future.
