2. Existing Product Research
• Research existing products/topics for your production and
production methods.
• This could be quite broad to begin with, but should focus
down to relevant examples [in terms of styles, techniques
and content].
• Consider your audience, what do they expect, what
techniques and content will interest them.
• Summarise your findings before generating your own initial
ideas for this project.
• Your summary should consider what your research has
provided and how this is useful to you and your production.
• Add more slides – this is encouraged!

Every Frame a Painting: Edger Wright – how to do visual comedy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FOzD4Sfgag
• Editing:
- He opens his intro with a fast montage of clips from Edger Wright movies especially starting with music from a scene
from ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’. The music is in time with the clips he uses mimicking the theme of Edger Wright. This
summarizes what the video is about as well as creating an overall feel to it.
- While he talks about the comedies he dislikes, he plainly creates a montage of well known movies as an example making
it clear to an audience who may have seen them.
- Sometimes within his examples he lets the audience watch a comparison of a scene between Edgar wrights comedies
and other comedies and to let the them decide which is better. This embraces Edgar Wrights work proving that its good
enough without an explanation.
• Narration:
- He quickly comes upfront to state his opinion on most modern comedies and how they can be bland. This is a more
effective build up towards analyzing Edgar wright as it gives the audience an idea of a boring films so that it heavily
contrasts to when he talks about Edgar wright. When he's about to make his overall statement of bad comedies he uses
a scene from ‘Scott Pilgrim’ to finish his sentence. This is a visual of way stating that Edgar Wright films are better
making his statement more powerful and entertaining.
- He also reassures that not all comedy is bad by saying “apart from animation and some commercials” visual comedy is
moving backwards. This is a good way to tell the audience that he is aware of platforms other then films and edger
wright. This also shows his knowledge with the subject.
- Another example of this is when he notifies that he isn't insulting the actors nor the jokes but the use of filming and
sound to deliver a joke. This refines the audiences thought on the topic rather then missing the point.
- He speaks as if the audience disagrees so he moves to each example trying to convince them. In each example, he
compares a scenario of a bad films visual comedy to Edgar wrights and goes into depth of how it works as storytelling as
well as being funny. By explaining it to depth makes sure that the audience has no reason to disagree.

Nerdwriter1: The death of Socrates – How To Read a painting
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKhfFBbVtFg
• Editing:
- Nerdwriter starts all his videos with opening title ‘the nerdwriter’. The title is in front of a milk being poured
into coffee. This type of logo gives a sense warmth to his videos as coffee is represented to be something to
keep you from being cold. It can also be associated to how he discusses different topics like as if it was a
conversation over a cup of coffee. Overall this sets a mood for the audience giving his video a unique feel.
- The next part to his opening is his second title which introduces the topic of this video. The title
‘Understanding Art CASE STUDY:’ fades in from a black background with a white font. Straight after the title
‘the death of Socrates’ fade in with a yellow font with the background fading to the painting. This a good
simple way of showing the importance with the painting as the yellow contrasts with everything else.
- As Nerdwriter is explaining the context behind the painting he highlights his keywords by having them being
titled on the screen. This makes it easier to listen to helping to keep the audiences focused to what he's
saying. The titles are animated moving from bottom to top making less boring to look at.
• Narration:
- He opens his narrative with a quick summary of the painter, year and country. With the quick summary he
gets a chance to explain and analyze his initial thoughts of the painting. This type of narrating keeps the
audience from getting bored. The way he analyses the piece is also poetic using interesting adjectives and
and verbs. This makes himself seem more passionate and intelligent making his video a reliable as a factual
source.

Good Blood: DEAR SEGA – A Sonic The Hedgehog Re-design
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6ak3ebBep0
• Editing:
- The editing is in my opinion the highest part of his video as he has a good use of transitions and animation.
- One of his key features is animating an old T.V with his montage of clips played on the T.V. This is to represent the T.V at
the time when sonic use to be popular. This creates a relatable nostalgic vibe for the audience. He uses this T.V style
whenever he uses found footage making it more of his own as well as staying away from copyright. This is also more
entertaining and unique to watch.
- He animates an icon to a different icon relating to whatever he is saying. This is much better then just having to watch a
bunch of images from google making his visuals memorable.
- He also animates his statistics into graphs which is an easier for the audience to read and absorb.
- When he starts to explain his re-design he also animates it to how it would look making the idea more plausible. This also
shows off his skill with the creative industry and that he has knowledge about gaming.
• Narrative:
- The narrative is styled like a message to the gaming company SEGA as his video is based on giving SEGA advice on there
failing game franchise sonic. This style of narrative makes his video personal and more powerful as it shows his level of
confidence to criticize a bigger company.
- The opening is a disclaimer informing the audience that he his only presenting creative ideas to a struggling franchise.
Not claiming to be an authority on game design. This tells the audience to take his re-design not to seriously but as
something to think about.
- He opens up to show and prove that the sonic franchise is failing with statistics and reviews. This is helps to make his re-
design more effective.
- Each idea he brings out is backed up with the such as the demographic and comparing towards SEGA’s bad and good
traits to sonic games.
- His outro informs SEGA and the audience of how he grew up playing sonic and that he's passionate towards the game.
This shows that he's relatable towards other sonic fans making his point stronger.

Howard Wimshurt: The Genius Behind Naruto’s Fight scene Animations – Norio Matsumoto.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6Z9m_0-DVo
• Editing:
- The editing is rather simple using found footage of the animation and use of titling to
emphasize keywords much like Nerdwriter but in a much low key fashion. Within the
montages of found footage Wimshurst adds subtitle giving us the name of the clips and
music. This is to prove his research is reliable information. This type of edit is split into
three segments for an intro, further analysis and outro.
- In-between each segment he physically annotates the animated scene within a
animation software while having a face cam. This allows him to show the audience each
key frame in more depth.
• Narrating:
- The narration of when Wimshrust talks over the found footage is more scripted as he gives
a good summary to his video and reassures what he is mainly focusing on within the video.
The way he does this is by focusing on the key attributes of the animator and how his
animations are effective. For the in between segments, he is more off script allowing
himself to freely speak. This gives him a confidence persona which embraces his knowledge
of animation.
7. Research summary
• The similarities of these products is that they are all
narratives with edited footage visualising there speech.
This format is the easiest to create and is suitable
towards there topic. This is style is most suitable towards
my ideas.
• The Nerd Writer and Good Blood have a very
professional way of editing as they use animation and
clever ways to make the visuals entertaining. This is
something I want for my product as it captures my skills
and helps emphasise the point.

• I will compare the P.T to other games.
• I will analyse the unique techniques the creators use to immerse the
player.
10. Idea 2 – Film

scenes that im analysing.
• I will also use found footage of other movies to give an examples of a non
realistic atmosphere.
• I will use some animation to make my annotations more entertaining to watch
making the annotations more memorable.
• Make my own footage as an example. This shows my understanding with film.

An essay on fight scenes within animation
Visuals
• I will use found footage from existing products and annotate them to visualise what I’m explaining.
• My disclaimer will be written at the intro to show the important to not take my opinion too
seriously.
• I will use animation to make my footage more entertaining as well as to visualise what I’m saying. It
also suits the theme of the video and would show that I have some knowledge of it. I would
animate a character representing me as well as animating the annotations.
Narrative
• Ide talk about what makes an fight scene good from the narrative to the actual animation.
• I would compare a bad scene to a good scene from existing products.
• I will start with a disclaimer stating that my opinion is from an audiences perspective.
Editor's Notes
Think about a subject you could write about, a design style could work in and why you would want to do it.
Think about content. What different visual and written elements would you include?
Initial ideas can be documented in any way that you would like. Mind maps are ok, but they don’t work for everyone. If you prefer to simply write your idea, do that. If you want to combine text and images, do that. As long as you communicate a potential idea, the method is up to you. Present you idea and also some justification for your choices. You can link this back to your research.
