Music Video Proposal
Band & Track Name: Matthew P – On Top
Running Time: 2:37
General style of music video:
Andrew Goodwin – I will follow these points of Andrew Goodwins theories:
1. There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals (with the visuals illustrating,
amplifying or contradicting the music.
2. There is a relationship between the music and the visual (with the visuals illustrating,
amplifying or contradicting the music). As the music bounces between positive and negative
itself due to key there will be a link.
3. The artist may develop their own star iconography, in and out of their videos, which, over
time, becomes part of their star image. Matthew P is from a seaside town and his EP covers
and songs often refer to these, for example on The Breakfast EP he refers to the seaside
town of Lowestoft and the cover is a seagull eating a chip, so the idea of the Great British
Seaside is prominent.
Joan Lynch (1984) – I will mostly be using her theory of having a narrative, although not the typical
progression of any huge events as I wish to play on the emotions of the viewer through themes and
issues rather than events. I don’t wish to use performance due to how the lip sync video turned out
but I am open to maybe some performance being involved in the background such as a busker who
is only in a short amount of the video, almost like a brief intertextual reference. As my video will
relate to the music and lyrics this means that my video won’t be conceptual.
Jon Gow (1992) – I will conform to these following Gow theories:
1. Videos which do not contain performance of the song. Although I am currently undecided on
whether to have a brief part of the video with performance in.
Briefly describe what will happen in your music video, highlighting camera angles and effects used:
My music video will follow a girl’s (I will use a girl due to the stereotypes of a girl being vulnerable
which will intrigue the viewer over their question of her safety) day only this girl will have some sort
of issue that is a taboo of society and will involve the girl carrying out tasks but will involve shots of
staring stranger and here having unique, memorable and happy moments even though she’s in a
bad situation. I want to have the start shot that same as the end shot and for her to end where she
begun to highlight the repetitive days and that if you were to watch the video again this could be the
next day because it’s the same. Although I don’t wish to get the viewer’s empathy for the
protagonist I do want them to see that this is a problem where people need help rather than neglect
but to also highlight that anyone can be happy in bad situations and make the viewer grateful for
their possessions and lives.
How have your test shoots gone? What worked? What will you need to change? Do you need to
shoot more test footage?
What resources will you need?
Props, styling, location, recording and lighting equipment:
I could use a shingle beach on a grey overcast day as this combines the idea of happiness (from the
positive connotations of the beach) and the idea of dull and sad (from the shingles rather than sand
and the grey sky rather than blue)
Canon DSLR 1100D
Tripod
Steadicam/Fig Rig

If I use the busker then I will need the guitar.
Who will you need to organise for your music video shoot? (Are they reliable?)
I will need two people. Travis Lurkins to play the Busker and Molly Taylor to play the girl. I have
reviewed their availability and have let them know weeks in advance, I have gone through the
official processes to enforce that this is important that they turn up.
When do you plan to shoot your music video?
I plan to dedicate three days to filming. The first day Tuesday 28th October, Saturday 15th November
and after reviewing footage I find that I need to film some more I will also have available Sunday 16th
November.
