'The Other Side of Sadness' Initial Brief
1. The Other Side of Sadness
A Music Video Pitch by Amy Wilkins
2. Type of Production
The production will be a 4 minute long music
video shot in and around Hartlepool in the
North East of England, focusing on the following
topics:
- Grief
- Depression
- Recovery
3. My Pitch
A girl, aged roughly 20(?) opens the
video depressed and reclusive, with
her room and life in disarray and
plans falling apart around her. It
tackles the character’s journey on her
road to recovery, hopefully covering
the various stages of grief on the
Kubler-Ross Model
She is seen numerous times during
the video at a graveyard, only for it to
be revealed at the end that her best
friend committed suicide little over a
year beforehand, with the memory of
her friend eventually saving her from
suffering the same fate
4. Research
I decided to put a lot of my research into mental health and depression, as I
don’t want to portray the character’s struggle unrealistically, using various
‘symptoms’ of depression to get the point across. These symptoms are as
follows:
- Trouble concentrating,
remembering details, and making
decisions
- Fatigue
- Feelings of guilt, worthlessness,
and helplessness
- Pessimism and hopelessness
- Insomnia, early-morning
wakefulness, or sleeping too
much
- Irritability
- Restlessness
- Loss of interest in things once
pleasurable, including sex
- Overeating, or appetite loss
- Aches, pains, headaches, or
cramps that won't go away
- Digestive problems that don't
get better, even with
treatment
- Persistent sad, anxious, or
"empty" feelings
- Suicidal thoughts or attempts
Please note that I will attach a full bibliography of all resources used within my research
5. Finance, Personnel, Contributors, and Time
As you can see, my production can be filmed in a day if we really use our
time wisely and take care to get the footage we need. Also, the fact that all
of our locations are in and around mine and my actor’s hometown will help
tremendously with this.
Also worth noting is that I will be personally doing all editing and will not
need to confer with anyone about ideas as per the normal industry insists
upon, so will be able to edit fully within a two day period, allowing one
extra just in case.

6. Facilities and Locations
My piece is going to be quite simple, outlining the character’s
descent into depression with no lip syncing / music scenes at all
as to not take away the meaning or story of the video, so thus
this leaves me with the following locations:
- Cemetery
- House
- Seaton Carew
- Park
- Workplace (possibly)
I will, of course, get full permission to film at all of these locations before
starting production.
7. Materials
As far as materials and props are concerned, I
have a few ideas in mind.
One of which is a photograph of the deceased
friend falling from the actor’s pocket, meaning
we will need to find and keep that safe.
Also the actor will need a change of clothes as
the piece is set over a long stretch of time.
8. Codes of Practice
All of my locations used will be public property,
or belong to / are affiliated with my actor. I will
need to contact their workplace to ensure we
can film briefly, and then ensure that we are
okay to film within Stranton Cemetery.
But as far as other locations go, all I will need
are the release forms from the homeowners.
