The Island Part I (Dawn)

Background of the song:
“The Island” is the third single by Australian drum and bass/electronica band Pendulum,
released from their most recent album ‘Immersion’. “The Island” is split into two parts; Part
I ‘Dawn’ and Part II ‘Dusk’, with Part I being my chosen track. Both parts were credited
mainly to 2 members of the band – Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen. “The Island” was
released in the UK on 19th September 2010 and has had a very positive reception.
The video for “The Island” was officially released on the bands YouTube page in September
2nd, 2010. It features a woman waking up on a desolate island, disorientated and confused, as
she doesn’t know where she is. She then sees another human across the wasteland and
begins chasing it all over the island, until it is revealed at the end of the video that she is
chasing herself, showing that the woman is in a time paradox.

The music video:
My video is going to be a combination of rehearsed performance, portraying a narrative and
used when the vocals of the song come in; and spontaneous filming, showing amplification for
the instrumental parts of the song. As I am the only one in my group, I will be introducing 2-4
people to feature in my video aswell as a large group of people for the spontaneous filming. As
the genre of the song is electronica, I will not be introducing conventions from other genres
such as guitars etc.
As there will be a narrative intertwined, the order of my shots will transition
from the narrative to the spontaneous filming and will change continuously.

The overall style of my music video is quite casual but with a very
vibrant atmosphere. For the narrative part of filming, the performers will be dressed all in the
same colour, probably black, and lip-syncing to the lyrics of the song. The rehearsed
performance will be used only for the part of the song that has the lyrics in, so it is only in this
part that the costume and shots are particularly important. As I am doing Part I of ‘The Island’
which is ‘Dawn’, I have decided I am going to have illustrative montage shots though out my
video, starting with a shot of a sunrise. This also links in with parts of the lyrics of the song,
such as ‘you arrive, in the rising sun’ and ‘as we go towards the light’, and would provide
an obvious connection between the song and the
video. This will be followed by interjecting clips of moving clouds, edited in slow motion,
showing the light in the sky going from bright morning sunrise (dawn) to dark evening sunset
(dusk). This will connect both parts of the song together showing that there is more to the
song than just ‘Dawn’ and gives a sense of ‘to be continued’.

The key part of the song in my opinion is the bridge verse, particularly the line ‘what are you
waiting for?’ For this part of the song, the shots and editing techniques will be most important
in conveying a strong message to the audience. Although I have not thought of a definite way
to portray this message, I intend to make it the most obvious and important part of the video.

I am planning to use a different setting for each amplified scene in my video. For the
rehearsed performance, I intend to use green screen to ensure a complete white
background, which will help enhance the dark, simple colours of the costume and to ensure
there is no distraction for the audience and that they are concentrating solely on the
performance.
For the spontaneous planning, I plan to film at either Liquid & Diva at Sunderland, or The Point
at Sunderland with a large group of friends whose permission I will have to film for my music
video. I will then capture the atmosphere and visuals of the night, aswell as the lights and
smoke used by the DJ. As all sound will be completely muted in editing, there is no need for me
to seek permission from the DJ as I will not be using any copyrighted sound. I intend to seek
permission from the owners of either club before I begin filming to ensure I am not breaching
any privacy rights. For the illustrative shots, I intend to take a 2-minute shot with no cuts of the
sky at different times of the day to capture the moving clouds and the morning, evening and
midday sunlight. As I live on the coast, it will be easy for me to capture a shot of the sunrise
from the banks on the beach.
