The New York University (NYU) School of Professional Studies (SPS) in Tokyo is looking for an Assistant Director who will be tasked with supporting the academic offerings of professional development and English-language programs at NYUSPS Tokyo. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, overseeing course delivery and operations, supporting faculty recruitment and onboarding, facilitating student recruitment and enrollment efforts, and contributing to the daily administration of programs at NYUSPS Tokyo. This position reports directly to the Director, NYUSPS Tokyo.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, ACADEMICS
Established in 2013 as the first international branch of the NYUSPS American Language
Institute (ALI), NYUSPS Tokyo initially offered high-quality, rigorous English-language programs
for students in Japan. In addition to university-quality English language programs, NYUSPS
Tokyo now offers a range of professional development programs in key industry areas that are
critical to Tokyo’s economic targets. As of 2017, NYUSPS Tokyo began delivering small-scale
professional development courses and workshops in topics like business innovation, marketing
and strategic management.
This year, NYUSPS Tokyo introduced the NYUSPS Global Executive Certificate programs,
noncredit credential programs that are designed specifically for the needs of Japanese industry,
and targeted at professionals who work in global contexts and want to advance their skills. Each
program is competency-based to enhance proficiency in particular industry areas, producing
skill-based outcomes that are directly applicable in the workplace. Drawing on pedagogic
models refined through many decades of NYUSPS delivering professional education in New
York, and centered around an approach focused on decision and application, the Global
Executive Certificate curriculum is localized to reflect the unique demands of each target sector
in Japan.
The NYUSPS Tokyo Assistant Director, Academics is tasked with supporting the academic
offerings of professional development and English-language programs at NYUSPS Tokyo.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, overseeing course delivery and operations,
supporting faculty recruitment and onboarding, facilitating student recruitment and enrollment
efforts, and contributing to the daily administration of programs at NYUSPS Tokyo. This position
reports directly to the Director, NYUSPS Tokyo.
Responsibilities
Academic Operations (50%)
● Support the daily operations of course delivery at NYUSPS Tokyo, including scheduled
classes, one-off programs and other curricular activities
● Produce annual operational calendar and contribute to course scheduling for each term
● Liaise on academic-related operational matters with NYUSPS offices in New York,
including the Office of the Dean, the Center for Academic Excellence and Support
(CAES), and the Office of Global and Strategic Initiatives
● Work closely with counterparts at Nichii Gakkan on operational and administrative issues
relevant to course delivery

2. ● Provide troubleshooting and guidance on the use of academic technology and other
digital resources enlisted in the delivery of coursework in Tokyo
● Support NYUSPS Tokyo Director on academic operations and other administrative
needs
● Ensure compliance with office policies and procedures by faculty and staff
Faculty Support (20%)
● Administer and distribute course evaluations to students
● Support hiring and onboarding of full-time and adjunct faculty
● Expand the adjunct faculty team to meet the needs of English language and professional
content courses taught in English and Japanese
● Communicate with faculty on an ongoing basis to address and resolve issues as they
arise
Recruitment and Marketing (20%)
● Assist with ongoing student recruitment and outreach, including but not limited to
supporting Open Campus sessions and corporate partnerships, delivering recruitment
events, and engaging with industry
● Support marketing initiatives by providing operational timelines and other key information
that would inform marketing materials
● Plan and facilitate special programs and events to build awareness of NYUSPS Tokyo
and increase program enrollment
Miscellaneous (10%)
● Coordinate closely with Nichii Gakkan and other key stakeholders in Tokyo to build
partnership and ensure operational efficiency
● Other duties as determined by Director, NYUSPS Tokyo and senior colleagues in Tokyo
and New York
Education
● Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in business, management, education or relevant area
Experience
● 6-8 years’ work experience including supervisory responsibility
● Management and successful delivery of large-scale, complex projects
● Experience operating in a multicultural and bilingual professional environment
(Japanese/English)
● Educational program development and administration as well as professional experience
in U.S. and/or Japan-based higher education institutions is preferred but not required
Skills and Knowledge

stakeholders

3. ● Ability to be successful in an unconventional work environment; maintaining

● Demonstrated project management in the form of planning, developing, implementing,
and evaluating programs

● Written and spoken fluency in English is required; written and spoken fluency in
Japanese is strongly preferred but not required
● Ability to balance the needs of diverse stakeholders in a challenging and dynamic
environment
