2. SHOT 1
The first shot is of a women in a red dress going down the stairs, her going down
the stairs may symbolise her going down the stairs to hell which is emphasised
with the darkness and her going gradually escaping the light. Furthermore, the
name of the song completely contradicts this scene due to the fact that she is
going down to darkness and the song promotes hope and light, also she is
wearing a red dress which is in fact a predominant colour in the music video. It is
worn by many characters that are of different class, ethnicity, gender and age.
The colour red connotes danger and being at risk and it is shown that there is a
majority of adults and youths at risk of going back to their past lives.
The colour red is predominant in this scene this demonstrates the fact that she is
already lost in the darkness and there is no turning back . Moreover in this scene I
can see that her eyes are closed this could represent death not only the fact that
she is physically in a dark place her mental state maybe depressive and dark as
well. The atmosphere is taking a toll on her.
3. SHOT 2
This scene shows Emeli Sande in the darkness this represents her gradually being
sucked back into her past life. Emeli Sande is placed on the third and she is mainly on
the first third of the scene also it is a close up shot which emphasises her emotion
and we can clearly see that she is in distress because of the fact that she has come
backed to save her community from giving in to the depression and gloom of hell.
Moreover, on the right hand side of the third there is a background image of the
street it is bright and cheerful which completely contrasts from the darkness the
Emeli is stood in.The brightness portrays hope and life which could relates to
heaven whereas the darkness can be a metaphor of shadows attempting to suck
Emeli Sande back in to her sinful lifestyle. In the background there is a tree which
represents the rural aspects of the society this could demonstrate purity do to the
face that its nature and it is possibly demonstrating life and how precious there is
only one tree.
This scene also represents the idea of supernaturalism because it contains bright
colours being yellow and some red this can show that once a person leaves the
darkness they enter in to an alternate universe being heaven also the angle wing
drawn on the wall further emphasises the heavenly atmosphere because are usually
associated with heaven.
4. SHOT 3
Emeli Sande represents the diverse society that she possibly could have been
raised. This is presented in terms of gender, class ethnicity and age. This
portrays the idea that people in society are no longer individuals most of the
time people could be suffering with the same situation such as low income to
not knowing whether parents will not be able to provide any financial support
for their children.
Youths in the video (from infancy to an adult) shows an increase in sadness as
they grow to underline society and the unfairness and injustice within in it as,
they grow to understand the negative aspects around them in society every
day with what they are surrounded by.As you can see from the pictures the
two little children seem very happy and excited an aware with all the strain and
hard times their society will throw to them when they get older.Whereas, the
adults seem more depresses hopeful for a better future because they already
know how the world works.
