3. Film Posters to Analyse
Film 1:
The Truth About
Emanuel (2013)
4. Film 1: Denotation/Connotation
Two girls
Window
Both seem to be
reflecting,
reinforced by the
reflection of
lights
They could be
looking back at their
past, allowing things
to make sense. This
is reinforced by the
title of the film
5. Character Representation
A close up shot is used on the two young
woman showing they have a close
relationship. However even though a
close up shot is used they are facing
different ways making them look distant.
Their face expressions look quite serious
which represents them as serious and
that something serious is going to
happen in the film. The lighting
complements this as its quite dark and
mysterious.
6. Setting/Location
The setting/location
looks like a window
which means there
inside.
The location may have
something to do with the
word ‘’void’’ in the
catchphrase. As Void
means an empty space
which may suggest the
emptiness of the
location.
7. Colour Symbolism
The shading/black on
her face symbolises
mystery.
The white symolises
that Emanuel is
innocent of whatever
truths they are trying
to figure out of her
life.
The colour green
symbolises
envy/jealousy. This is
shown through their
facial expressions and
body language.
Also green symbolises
life and this links with
the catch phrase
“Two lives. Two voids.
One secret.”
8. Language of Film Title & Catchphrases
In the catchphrase,
the last number is
‘’one’’ which shows a
theme that no
matter what
differences you
have, one thing will
always bind you
together and creates
a mystery. It makes
the audience feel
that two different
people share the
same secret.
The film title links to the
catchphrase as we learn
the truth about her secret.
Film Title
Catchphrase: “Two lives. Two voids. One
secret. “
9. Text Analysis
The title of the film is
in white. White
represents wholeness
and completion,
however this
challenges this
representation
because the letter “N”
in “Emanuel” is split in
half representing a
relationship problem
as in the drama genre
there is usually family
conflict.
The word
‘’Emanuel’’ is in
larger font than
the rest of the
title. This implies
that ‘’Emanuel’’ is
the main focus of
the film.
10. Framing & CAM SAMC
A two shot is used to show
that the two women have
some sort of relationship.
In the framing there is an
empty space between the
two female characters
which may imply that they
are both missing something
in their lives.
A front view and mid shot is
used to show their facial
expressions.
11. Stereotypes
• What are the stereotypes in your genre?
• There are stereotypes such as there will be a tragic
scene and death and one of the characters fall into
an emotional break down
• Are they re-inforced or challenged in the poster?
• The stereotype of emotions is portrayed in this
poster through facial expressions however there is
no evidence of death. Although the shallow focus of
the lights could suggest perhaps being in a hospital

14. Characters Representation
On this poster the character is
represented as independent and
fearless.
The character is also
represented as brave by the
way he is standing in such a
stormy atmosphere
15. Setting/Location
The setting has a
helicopter which could
suggest help is at hand.
However, it could also
suggest that it’s a threat
towards him
symbolising death.
In a flooded stormy city
The place has got palm
trees which could suggest
a beach near by could be
one of the cause of the
flood. However, it could
also be from the storm.
16. Colour Symbolism
The colours are mostly navy blue and grey
with a tint of white.
The blue could symbolise sadness
especially because it’s a dark shade of blue
(navy).
The small amount of white could
symbolise slight hope and a chance for
survival.
Grey could symbolise dullness and
unhappiness.
17. Language Of Film Title & Catchphrase
The fact that hours stands out in big bold
letters suggests that time is running out
too quickly.
The catchphrase ‘every second
counts’ creates tension and suggests
the importance of time and using
time wisely.
The fact that its is separate and in
capitals shows its significance.
The catchphrase creates a serious
warning tone as a way to warn the
audience that the plot is based on
time.
18. Text Analysis
The catchphrase is in capitals and
in bold handwriting showing that
seconds also matter as much as
hours do.
Seconds are very short and quick
suggesting a warning to not
waste any second that each one
is helpful in his case.
The fact that the title is bigger
than everything else suggest that
hours is the significant symbol
throughout the entire movie.
19. Framing & CAM SAMC
The long shot suggest his form of freedom being
outside but yet entrapped by his surroundings. It
also helps him look more dominant.
Establishing shot portraying the danger that he is
in and creating tension.
The buildings behind him and the trees swaying
are far behind suggesting that he is leaving
everything behind and taking huge risk alone.
Asymmetrical balance suggesting that he is in
an unstable position and it helps him stand
out as if he is not equal to anything else.
Its also a rule of thirds is shown in this image
because nature and the characters body
seem to be in line with each other.
20. Stereotypes
• What are the stereotypes in your genre?
• There are stereotypes such as there will be a
tragic scene and death and one of the characters
fall into an emotional break down.
• Are these stereotypes reinforced or challenged in
your poster?
• The stereotype of tragedy is reinforced in our poster
through the setting in the background however,
there is no evidence that an emotional breakdown
will occur
