1. Social realism is portrayed in this screen grab of
Emile Sande’s music video to Heaven. The
characters look very realistic, for example there
is one lady, walking holding shopping bags. This
looks realistic because it is something that we
see on a daily basis. Also, a sense of realism is
portrayed within the car in the background, they
look as if they just happen to be driving through
the area at the time this was filmed. The
handheld camera work that’s moving backwards
as she walks toward the camera, also gives us a
sense of social realism because it makes us feel
like we’re in the video with her.
The montage editing before and after this shot, is Emile Sande in a
flowery scene and a man who doesn't’t look the richest. This shows a
contrast between good parts in life and bad parts. This could also
symbolize a connection between heaven and hell.

2. Social realism is represented in this screen grab.
In terms of mise en scene the costume of the
figure is black, this means that the audience
cannot see the figures face or what they look
like, this shows a sense of social realism because
the audience are able to see that it can be
anybody in this situation. You do not have to
look a certain way to give into temptation. The
graffiti on the walls surrounding the figure show
a sense of realism from the location that this
video is shot in, showing that this is the type of
behavior that occurs here.

your only god’ and the shot after is two little girls having fun at a park,
this contrasts the figure image because it shows a sense of happiness in
other people. Also the view of the church in the background shows us
that god is always near.

3. Social realism is portrayed in this screen grab.
The image is a man who looks to be sleeping or
living on the streets, meaning he is a homeless
man. This can be considered as social realism
because we see this everyday. The use of mise
en scene shows other people walking in the
background, meaning that nobody is showing
this an any sympathy, this could be because they
see this so often. The costume of the man is
dark and scruffy, meaning that he actually looks
like he's been living on the streets.

and also another girl making direct eye contact. There is also a man
looking toward the floor, these images can represent the negative effects
of falling for temptations.

4. Transcendence is the existence or experience
beyond the normal physical level. This screen
grab represents transcendence because the
angel wings behind the girl portrays a spiritual
meaning, showing that there is somebody
watching over here. This can also give a message
that she is innocent and is going to go to heaven
in the afterlife. The setting factor of mise en
scene clearly shows us that the girl is the main
focus in the screen grab, this is because there is
nobody else in the shot, however there is graffiti
on the wall in the background, his could
represent the area she lives in.

heaven” this gives the audience the impression that this angel is a
representation of what is in heaven or what will be there. It reflects the
words that are being sung.

5. Transcendence is shown in this screen grab
through the use of writing on a dirty window.
The mise en scene shows gives the audience the
idea that the location of this music video isn't
the cleanest of areas. The transcendence factor
is the fact the quote says “fear is your only God”
this is seen as transcendence because God is
seen as the existence beyond the normal
physical level, meaning that God is the spiritual
transcendence in the modern world.

flowery/ garden type scene looking toward the sky and singing, this is
important because everybody assumes that heaven is in the sky, this
could mean that she was singing to God directly.

6. Transcendence is shown in this screen grab
because transcendence is the existence or
expierence beyond the normal physical level.
The sun shining through this window amost
looks like it is a sign from above. The window
looks as if it is a window from a church, for
example a stain glass window. This also
represents transcendence because it is the idea
that God is real, meaning that God is the
spiritual transcendence. Some people could see
this as a message from God or God just trying to
reach out to them.

bottle, this could represent new life or a new beginning. And the shot
after is Emeli Sandé singing with a dark background, like it was night
time. This could represent darkness, or a dark place/ state of mind which
could mean a consequence of temptation.
