The music video "Heaven" by Emile Sande portrays social issues like poverty, drug use, and diversity through shots of working class and homeless people. Lighting is used symbolically, with bright shots of Sande representing hope contrasted with darker shots. Camera work focuses on close-ups of faces to show emotions. Editing uses filters and cuts to suggest life's stresses. The video represents gender, ethnicity, age, and socioeconomic groups to reflect London's diversity and issues faced by its people.

2. The music video ‘Heaven; by Emile Sande establishes a
close relationship with today’s society, the way it
operates and the issues arising. This can be seen through
the young generations taking drugs, ethnic diversity and
working class people portrayed.
3. The lightning changes from light to dark throughout the
music video. For example, the shots of Emile Sande singing
are usually lighted up to portray the hope she has for the
future and for the lives of all the working class or homeless
people that can be seen in her video.
Mise en scene
At the mise en scene we can see that there is ethnic
diversity demonstrated. This can further portray the
multiculturalism which links to the characteristics of London,
as London has a high number of immigrants and ethnic
minorities.
4. Mise en scene
This is a wide shot therefore it allows the audience to have
a look at the mise en scene. We are able to see that this
place has been constructed by the homeless man and for
him it may be meaning `home` as this is the place where
he lives at and spends most of his time. The colour in the
surroundings are unsaturated and quit sinister which can
symbolise the atmosphere and the feeling we get from it
which would be quit dark and negative. The unsaturated
colours in the clothing may be symbolising the emotions of
the man which are mainly hopelessness.
5. Camera work
This is a close up shot and which
therefore always the audience to see the
emotions of the person in the video. As
the person is establishing a direct mode
of address we can see in his eyes that he
is struggling with his life however he still
has a smile on his face which may suggest
that he is waiting and hoping for the
better future.
Ethnicity/ cultural context
Choosing to video a man who is from a black
ethnicity and background may be in order to
portray the problem in today`s world and society
with discrimination against black people and
ethnic minorities. In this way, the singer is trying
to demonstrate that this behaviour is wrong and
should be changed.
6. Camera Work
The majority of the shots are close up shots in order to portray the
feelings and emotions of the working class or homeless people.
This type of shot further allows us to establish a closer relationship
with the characters and encourages us to show sympathy towards
them.
There is another close up shot, however this time is is of a cross.
This has religious connotations and can be linked to spirituality
which can mean that Emile Sande herself is strongly believes in
God.
The high angle of the young girl wearing a red dress places the
attention on her and makes her look vulnerable as she looks like
she may be a prostitute which links to the ideology of hedoism.
However, at the same time a juxtaposition is created as the high
angle symbolises that god is looking down on her and is protecting
her.
7. Camera work
This is once again a close up shot which allows the audience to have a
detailed look at the facial expressions and appearance of the old man.
We can see that the man has a beard and clearly doesn`t shave it
which can suggest that he cannot afford to do that and also it seems
like he is homeless by the appearance. Furthermore, we can see that
he does not take any care of himself and therefore that makes him look
older than he is. The shot is taken from a eye level angle however one
of the eyes of the men can barely be seen as of the lighting as a result
of the angle that the shot is taken by and this therefore implies that by
only being able to see one of his eyes this may mean that he is able to
see the world with only one eye and therefore he is beginning to
disappear himself as a result of the loss of hope. Emile Sande may have
decided to shoot that man in specific as it shows how some people are
desperately in need of help.
8. Camera work
This shot is an over shoulder shot as the man has been shot
from his back over his shoulder. Furthermore, it is shot from
a high angle which makes the boy look inferior, powerless
and weak. The shot allows us to see the mise en scene
around the boy and we can therefore makes it clear that the
boy is in a field and may be taking drugs. On the boy`s back
we can see that he has tattoos of angles wings which
therefore implies that he may be religious and believing in
Christianity in specific. This can suggest that the boy believes
that whatever happens he will always be guarded by God
and helped if necessary. Moreover, as the boy looks helpless
the angle wings may be a symbolism of his faith that better
days will come.
9. Editing
There are many editing effects added to the video including filters, over glaze, grainy
film or faded film which in specific portrays the idea of realism.
The contemporary society issues shown in the video such as drug abuses and
addictions, poverty and individualism demonstrate the idea of realism. In addition,
the location where the video is shot is Bethnal green- London. The place is portrayed
in its natural way in order to portray the idea of realism, by showing the audience
the dirty roads, dangerous subways and dull places. It is clearly visible that the roads
were not closed in order to use them to shoot, this therefore shows realism.
The video is constructed consisting of lots of cuts and the clips change very fast
and constantly to suggest how life of the working class people and celebrities can
be hard and stressful. Even though, Emile Sande is not working class and is
financially stable her life can be equally hard as the life of the working class and
she may be going through many challenges too.
10. Editing
In this shot we can see that there is a ray of light
shinning through which may be symbolising the hope
of all of the characters which have been shown in the
video. It may also be symbolising how the brighter
future is about to come very soon.
This shot followed up the previous show which was
showing how the singer Emile Sande was singing ad
looking at the sky at the same time. Therefore having
this show following up may be referring to a moment
that she had as a dream in her imagination. And
therefore the editing effects of the rainbow colours and
white rays of light may be referring to the innocence of
people and ow the position they are in right now is not
their direct fault.
The editing of the saturated colours of bright pink
and orange may be symbolising the girl. The girl
looks very young and she looks helpless and
disappointed, however the saturated edited colours
may be symbolising the other side of her character
which is not shown through her facial expressions.
11. Will you recognize me
In the flashing lights?
Flashing lights are associated with paparazzi cameras, which
are pointed at the celebrities they’re taking pictures of. Not
only will the flashing light drown out her appearance, but
these situations will change her personality.
So by saying this, Emile Sande is asking whether people that
know her will think of her the same way when she’s famous
and being mobbed by paparazzi?
Oh heave, oh heaven
I wake with good intentions
But the day, it always lasts too long
Then I`m gone
Oh heaven, oh heaven
I wake with good intentions
But the day, it always lasts too long
This lyrics explores and relates to the bad things that Emile
Sande may have done through her daily life. Therefore, eve
though we always wake up with good intentions,
unpredictable things may happen which can force us to
make something bad in fact.
Emile Sande beliefs in God as well as in heaven, however
she does not follow a certain religion. The concept of
heaven is about trying to be good. In this part Godwin`s
theory of lyrics linked to visuals is seen, as when Sande sings
this line the camera switches to a view of the clouds to
signify what heaven is like.
12. ’’I wake with good intensions’’
This line of the song implies that in some cases people are
forced to do some bad things due to the circumstances in
their lives even if they ‘wake with good intensions’.
‘’Oh heaven, oh heaven’’
The constant repeating of this life exaggerates the
religious connotations of the video as well as suggesting
that Emile Sande strongly believes in God herself.
13. Gender- In the music video we can see that all genders are targeted therefore no gender
is excluded. Stereotypically, the male are usually strong and independent however in the
video of Sande the male gender Is actually pictured as being vulnerable for example the
old man in the beginning of the video is homeless and there is also shot of a man who is
taking drugs.
Ethnicity- In the video we can see the use of both black and white characters which
reflects the cultural and ethnical diversity in today`s society. As there are characters from
black background being shot in the video this may be in order to convey the message of
how we should all respect each other no way where we come from. Furthermore, usually
the black people are stereotyped as working class and therefore more likely to be
homeless however in the video we can see that this stereotype is challenged as there are
shots which show white people who are working class. Ethnic diversity in the video
portrays characteristics of London- Bethnal Green.
Age- People from different ages are shown in the video. However, there is a focus on the
younger generation and a portrayal of the problems in our society which mostly relate to
younger generation which include smoking and possibly prostitution (which may be
shown by the girl with the red dress going down the stairs) The focus on the young
generation can be in order to tell the audience that our future is in the hands of the
young people therefore if they would like a brighter and better future they would need to
fight for it.
Region- The video is based in Bethnal Green which is in London, therefore this is why it
offers us with the variety with ethnicities used.
Socio-economic- The video mainly focuses on the problems that we as a society are
experiencing and must change therefore one of the main problems that is demonstrated
and pictured In the music video is poverty. Therefore the socio economic targeted from
that video will be the working class.
