Movie Poster Analysis

    Jessica mackenzie
The story follows a young girl named Susie Salmon
who is murdered by a neighbour. Susie watches
from her own particular version of heaven as her
devastated family and friends try to cope with
their loss.

In the poster the sky seems darker on the side she
is walking away from. This portrays the fact that
she may be walking away from her life on earth.
Also she’s shown running through the fields
representing how she wants freedom. The birds
flying from the tree seem to be heading towards
the sky, this gives us an idea that she is leaving
and going to heaven.

The title ‘The Lovely Bones’ contradicts because
we would not describe bones as a lovely feature,
we compare it with death or a cracking sound.
This makes the audience wonder how it could
possibly be lovely and want to know more about
the story – gripping their attention.
Conviction follows a story of a woman who fights
for her brother's innocence in a wrongful murder
conviction. It shows the emotions and the
difficulties that she faces.

The picture of this poster is very dark and dull, this
links to the story as the life of these siblings as they
are forever in the dark. They are sitting together
looking across a lake – looking over a journey.
The tree beside them is large and makes them look
small – this may be how they feel trying to prove
innocence in a very hard world. They are being
shadowed by the harsh reality of how unfair life
can really be.

Looking at this poster the dark colours make you
feel like it is a very unhappy story, this makes the
audience sympathise with the characters and
draws them into it more – making them want to
watch the movie to find out more.
A husband and wife who recently lost their baby
adopt a 9-year-old girl who is not nearly as innocent
as she claims to be.

This poster consists of what we can only assume as
the main character of this film. The writing below the
image is made to look like a young child has written
it as the text is spaced and messy, this then links in
with the title as we associate an orphan with a young
child. At the top of the poster in capitals is 'THERES
SOMETHING WRONG WITH ESTHER' this instantly
tells us that the young girl on the poster is Esther
and she is what the film is cantered around.

Although the poster seems very dark her face seems
very highlighted and focuses very much on her face
to make it eye-catching. Her face is actually
symmetrical, this adds a freaky edge to it - jumps out
the page.

This poster works well because it keeps the story a
mystery and is able to capture the audience into
wanting to know more about this dark young girl.
Robert Neville is a scientist who was unable to stop the
spread of the terrible virus that was incurable and man-
made. Immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in
what is left of New York City and perhaps the world. But
he is not alone. Mutant victims of the plague lurk in the
shadows... watching Neville's every move... waiting for
him to make a fatal mistake.

The smoke and decay on this poster hints to the theme of
destruction and the turned over cars and dumped streets
also link to the fact that the city is abandoned and he is
alone.
The colours of the poster are old and rusted, this again
displays the state that the city is in.

The title ‘I am legend’ is placed in the centre of the
viewers eyes and is in capitals. This shows the importance
of the title to explain the story. He is clearly a legend for
living in a lonely world and trying to save the small
amount of chance he has left.

The combination of good imagery with imaginative text
leave the viewer wanting to see the movie which is
ultimately the main aim of any movie poster.
