6. LOOP IN
It has two incoming lines viz.
1. Mir Bazar— Wanpoh circuit 1
2. Mir Bazar— Wanpoh circuit 2
Incoming voltage level is 132 kV.

7. CAPACITOR BANK.
It has a capacitor bank on 132kV
side.
It is used for power factor
improvement.
It is also used to improve voltage
level.

8. 132 KV BUSBARS
There is double bus-bar system.
1. Main bus.
2. Reserve bus.
Transformers are charged through main
bus.
Incase of any fault or maintenance of
main bus the continuity of supply is
done through reserve bus.
MAHANT BACHITTAR SINGH COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY
9. POWER TRANSFORMERS.
There are five power
transformers(BHEL made).
Total capacity of these transformers is
130MVA.
Input =132kV.
Output =33kV.
Transformer

Capacity
1 20MVA
2 20MVA
3 20MVA
4 20MVA
5 50MVA

10. 33KV BUSBARS
There are three 33kV bus-bars.
1. Main bus.
2. Reserve bus.
Main bus is charged by the
transformers.
Voltage on the bus is 33kV and
current is about 1500A.
Feeders are supplied by 33kV buses.
Any case of any fault on main bus
reserve bus is used to supply the
feeders.

11. LOOP OUT
132kV supply is used to charge the main
bus and then is sent out to
AWANTIPORA through loop out system
The loop out is also a double circuit.
1. Wanoph—Awantipora circuit 1.
2. Wanpoh –Awantipora circuit 2.
Here only switching of loop out can be
done.

12. DIFFERENT EQUIPMENTS USED IN GRID STATION.
1. Current transformer.
2. Potential transformer.
3. Lightening arrestors.
4. Isolators.
5. Circuit breakers.
6. Wave trap.
7. Protective relays.

13. CURRENT TRANSFORMER.
C.T. is instrumental transformer used to
step down the current to a known ratio.
It is a multi-cored transformer.
One core is used for metering and
others for protection.
Current transformer rating :
1600/800/400:1A.
It is connected in series in the line.
MAHANT BACHITTAR SINGH COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY
14. POTENTIAL TRANSFORMER.
The instrument potential transformer
(PT) steps down voltage of a circuit
to a low value that can be effectively
and safely used for operation of
instruments such as ammeters,
voltmeters, watt meters, and relays
used for various protective purposes.
Potential transformer is used in
parallel with the line
The main use of potential
transformer is (a)measurement (b)
protection

15. LIGHTENING ARRESTORS.
LA discharges the over voltage surges
to earth and protects the electrical
equipments against switching surge
voltages and lightening surges.
It is generally connected between
phase conductor and ground.

16. ISOLATORS
Isolators are used to disconnect the
part of system for general
maintenance and repairs.
They are always operated under no-
load conditions.
They are manually operated.
MAHANT BACHITTAR SINGH COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY
17. WAVE TRAP
It is used for trapping the high
frequency communication signals
sent on power line from the remote
sub-station. It diverts this
communication signal to the telecom
panel in the sub-station control room.
MAHANT BACHITTAR SINGH COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY
18. CIRCUIT BREAKERS.
Circuit breaker is an equipment
which can open or close a circuit
under normal as well as faulty
conditions.
It is manually as well as
automatically operated.
For automatic operation relays are
used to control the circuit
breakers.
SF6 type circuit breakers are used
on 132kv side.
Vacuum circuit breakers (VCB) are
used on 33kv side are used.

19. PROTECTIVE RELAYS
Relay is a device used to detect/sense
the faults and initiates the circuit breaker
to isolate the defective element from
rest of system.
Different types of relays installed at
wanpoh are;
1. IDMT relay(directional and non-
directional relays).
2. Primary relays such as bucholz
relay, restricted earth fault relay.
Directional relays include over current
or earth fault.
Non directional relays include over
current or earth leakage.
Bucholz relay is a gas activated relay
used for protecting oil immersed
transformers against all types of
internal faults.

20. CONTROL ROOM
Here two panels are installed.
1. 132kv control panel.
2. 33kv control panel.
All switching and control process of
the grid takes place here.
Also the switching of loop out is
done here.
All relay control lies here.
21. LOAD MONITORING
Here all loads on both 132kv line and
33 kv feeders is watched.
Here different meters are installed for
monitoring.
It a part of control room
22. BATTERY BANK
It is the heart grid station which
provides dc supply for the protection
of grid so that in case of auxiliary
supply failure the protection gets
continuous supply.
It provides 110 v dc supply to relays.
23. CONCLUSION
It is itself a feeling of gratitude to have visited one of the chief Electrical
installation of the Srinagar. Though the period of 45 days was not that
much to have explored such a wonderful sight. I am sure that the technical
knowledge which I have gained at Grid Station WANPOH would serve great
in future. Still I am pleased to have learnt a lot about the work culture and
the ethics of industries.
