UPPTCL, Uttar Pradesh Power Transmission
Corporation Limited is created in 2006. It is responsible
for the planning and managing the transmission of
electricity.
 It has its corporate office Shakti Bhavan at Lucknow.
 The Partapur substation which is situated at Merrut was
established in 1965.
A substation is a part of an electrical generation,
transmission, distribution system which transforms voltage
from high to low, or the reverse or perform any of several
other important functions.
 To Change voltage from one level to another.
 To Switch transmission and distribution circuits into
and out of the grid system.
 To Measure various parameters.
 To Connect communication signals to the circuits.
 To Eliminate lightning and other electrical surges from
the system.
 To Connect electric generation plants to the system.
 To Make interconnections between the electric systems
of more than one utility.
 Switch Yard
 Control Room
 Battery Room
 Transformer
 Poly Phase Transformer
 Instrument Transformers
 Current Transformer
Potential Transformer
 Protective devices
 Lightening Arrester
Circuit Breaker
 Insulators
 Isolators
 Conductors
 A transformer is a static machine which works on the
law of electromagnetic induction used for
transforming power from one circuit to another without
changing frequency. The main parts of the transformer
are:
Core
Coil
Insulation
Bushings
Conservator
Breather
Buchholz Relay
In Partapur substation there are
three transformers
63 MVA 132/33kV (T/F No. 1)
40 MVA 132/33kV (T/F No. 2)
40 MVA 132/33kV (T/F No. 3)
 A current transformer (CT) is
a transformer that is used to
produce an alternating current (AC)
in its secondary which is proportional
to the AC current in its primary.
 It converts high input current to
low output current for the purpose
of:
 Instrumentation
 Protection
 Potential transformer is a voltage
step-down transformer which
reduces the voltage of a
high voltage circuit to a lower
level for the purpose of
measurement.
 These are connected across or
parallel to the line which is to be
monitored.
 It is a protective device which
conducts the high voltage surge
on the power system to ground.
 The lightning arrester provides
protection against surges.
 Circuit breaker is mechanical device which is so designed
which controlled under both normal and abnormal
conditions .
 They are used for high capacity.
 A circuit breaker can make or break a circuit either
manually or automatically under all condition viz. no load
and short circuit condition .
 Types of circuit breaker is :
1. Oil circuit breaker
2. Sulphur Hexa Fluoride circuit breaker
3. Air blast circuit breaker
4. Vacuum circuit breaker
 Electrical Insulator must be used in electrical system to
prevent unwanted flow of current to the earth from its
supporting points.
 The insulator plays a vital role in electrical system.
Electrical Insulator is a very high resistive path through
which practically no current can flow.
 There are mainly three types of insulator used as
overhead insulator likewise
 Pin Insulator
 Suspension Insulator
 Strain Insulator
 Isolator is a manually operated mechanical switch
which separates a part of the electrical power system
normally at off load condition.
 There are different types of isolators available
depending upon system requirement such as
 Double Break Isolator
 Single Break Isolator
 Depending upon the position in power system, the
isolators can be categorized as
 Bus side isolator
 Line side isolator
 Transfer bus side isolator
Conductor is a physical medium to carry electrical energy
form one place to other. It is an important component of
overhead and underground electrical transmission and
distribution systems.

 All the equipments are controlled from the control
room. Control panels are installed in the control room.
 All the relays and metering devices are fitted in the
control panel.
 Any transformer, circuit breaker can be controlled from
these panels.
 To measure current, voltage, power factor, frequency
various types are metres are fitted in the panel.
 When more than one cells are connected together, it will
be a battery.
 The battery room is also known as heart of the substation.
 Substation batteries typically provide DC supplies for
protection and control equipment (principally relays), and
also provide trip and close current to circuit breakers.
 In substations rechargeable batteries are used.
 In Partapur substation there are 55 cells are connected in
series. Each cells are of 2 volts. So the total voltage will be
110 volt. The capacity of battery is 300 Ah.
After visiting the substation I get the practical knowledge
about the working, protection, & control of various
equipment of electrical system. By visiting the site I
explored the technical as well as administrational work on
the substation.
