2.2 Pupils will be able to demonstrate understanding of a
variety of linear and non-linear texts in the form of print and
non-print materials using a range of strategies to construct
meaning.

2.2.3 Able to read and understand simple and compound
sentences.
2.2.4 Able to read and understand a paragraph with simple and
compound sentences.
Objective: By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
(a) Given a reading text, read and spell the words correctly.
(b) Individually, given a reading text with 5 multiple choice questions,
answer at least 3 of them correctly.
(c) Individually, given a reading text with 8 fill in the blank questions,
answer at least 5 of them correctly.
Time : 60 minutes
Teaching Aids: power point presentation (animal riddles, pictures of little red riding hood
story), task sheets in ppt (multiple choice questions and fill in the blank
questions with MCQ answers)

Little Red Riding Hood Reading Comprehension Lesson

  • 1. Year 3 Focus: Reading Theme: World of Stories Topic: Little Red Riding Hood Content Standard: 2.2 Pupils will be able to demonstrate understanding of a variety of linear and non-linear texts in the form of print and non-print materials using a range of strategies to construct meaning. Learning Standard: 2.2.3 Able to read and understand simple and compound sentences. 2.2.4 Able to read and understand a paragraph with simple and compound sentences. Objective: By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to: (a) Given a reading text, read and spell the words correctly. (b) Individually, given a reading text with 5 multiple choice questions, answer at least 3 of them correctly. (c) Individually, given a reading text with 8 fill in the blank questions, answer at least 5 of them correctly. Time : 60 minutes Teaching Aids: power point presentation (animal riddles, pictures of little red riding hood story), task sheets in ppt (multiple choice questions and fill in the blank questions with MCQ answers) Extra-Curricular Elements: Constructivism, Critical Thinking Skills (Generating Ideas), Multiple intelligences (verbal, spatial), moral values (cooperation)
  • 2. Stage/Time/ Activity Teaching & Learning Strategy Notes SET INDUCTION (5 mins) 1. Teacher shows riddles in the form of power point presentation. 2. Teacher reads them. 3. Pupils answer the riddles. Read and guess Power point presentation (riddles) Educational emphases: ICT Thinking skills PRE-READING STAGE (10 mins) 4. Teacher shows pictures about Little Red Riding Hood story. 5. Teacher asks pupils if they know the picture shown. 6. Pupils respond to teacher. 7. Teacher tells the pupils that the picture is about Little Red Riding Hood Story. 8. Teacher shows a video of Little Red Riding Hood Story. Question and answer Power point presentation Educational emphases: Thinking skills Multiple intelligences (Verbal linguistic)
  • 3. Stage/Time/ Activity Teaching & Learning Strategy Notes READING STAGE (15 mins) 9. Teacher distributes the story. 10. Teacher reads the text. 11. Teacher reads out the text and pupils follow. 12. Invite few pupils to read aloud the passage. 13. Teacher explains difficult words and meaning of the text by asking questions. 14. Pupils respond to the questions. Modelling Reinforcement Shared reading Explanation of text Passage on Little Red Riding Hood WHILE-READING STAGE (20 mins) 15. Teacher gives exercise A to pupils. 16. Teacher discusses the answer with pupils.
