3. Motorways
The motorways of Pakistan are a
network of multiple-lane, high-
speed, controlled-access highways
in Pakistan, which are owned,
maintained and operated federally
by Pakistan's National Highway
Authority.
All Motorways in Pakistan are pre-
fixed with the letter ‘M' followed
by the unique numerical
designation of the specific
motorway. “E.g. M1”
4. Opening and Length of Motorways:
• The first motorway in Pakistan was opened in November 1997.
• As of Feb 2021, 2429 km of motorways are operational, while an additional 1312 km are under
construction or planned.
Features:
• Pakistan's motorways are either six-lanes or four-lanes.
• Universal minimum speed limit of 80 km/h and a maximum speed limit of 110 km/h for HTV and
120Km/h for LTV.
• They have a central median and are fenced on the outside for safety and prevention of unauthorized
access.
• Entry to all motorways in Pakistan are restricted to fast-moving vehicles only, including high-
performance heavy bikes.

6. Freeway:
• "Control of access", "Freeway", and "Motorway" redirect here.
A controlled-access highway is a type of highway that has been designed for high-speed
vehicular traffic, with all traffic flow—ingress and egress—regulated.
Common English terms are freeway (in parts of Australia, parts of Canada, Iran, Iraq,
Israel, South Africa, Taiwan, and the western part of the United States).
Motorway (in the United Kingdom, Ireland, most of Europe, Pakistan, New Zealand, and
parts of Australia)
Expressway (parts of Canada, parts of the United States, India, and many other Asian
countries; in some European countries and in some parts of the United States this also
designates a type of controlled-access road of lower class than a motorway).
7. Cont.…
• Other similar terms include throughway (in the United States) and parkway.
Some of these may be limited-access highways, although this term can also refer
to a class of highway with somewhat less isolation from other traffic.
• In countries following the Vienna convention, the motorway qualification implies
that walking and parking are forbidden, and they are reserved for the use of
motorized vehicles only.
• A controlled-access highway provides an unhindered flow of traffic, with
no traffic signals, intersections or property access. They are free of any at-grade
crossings with other roads, railways, or pedestrian paths, which are instead
carried by overpasses and underpasses.
8. Cont.…
Entrances and exits to the highway are provided at interchanges by slip
roads (ramps), which allow for speed changes between the highway
and arterials and collector roads.
On the controlled-access highway, opposing directions of travel are
generally separated by a median strip or central reservation containing
a traffic barrier or grass. Elimination of conflicts with other directions of
traffic dramatically improves safety and capacity.
9. Expressway :
• Expressway are an network of multiple lane, high speed tolls roadways in Pakistan, which are possessed,
kept up, and worked by different organizations of government. All federal expressways are controlled by
the National Highway Authority, while others are commonly and municipally controlled.
• Expressways are usually higher grades than national highways, but differ from motorways by having
fewer access restrictions. All federal expressways are pre-fixed with the letter 'E' (for "expressway")
followed by the unique numerical designation of the specific highway (with a hyphen in the middle).i.e., E-1
Peshawar-Torkham expressway
• Expressway means a divided highway where intersections and direct access to adjacent properties have
been eliminated. (SEW)
• Expressway is the equivalent of what used to be called "Limited Access Roads". These roads may have
some interchanges or stop signs where local roads connect to it.
