4. Roman London
• London was founded by Romans, they call their new
city “LONDINIUM”.
• It became the capital city of Britain in the 2nd century.
• It had lots of important public buildings, like a
basilica, temple, bath houses, amphitheatre, and
forts.

6. Norman and Medieval London
1066- 15th century
• William the Conqueror captured London in 1066 and
was crowned King in Westminster Abbey.
• He built the Tower of London on the river Thames.
This was the first stone castle in London.
• London Bridge was the only bridge across the
Thames until 1739.
• Trade and population grew rapidly in Medieval
London.

• In Tudor London, trade

very rich.
• London was a multi-cultural
city and people settled there

Theatre flourished in Tudor London. William
Shakespeare was a popular figure and he wrote for the

10. The Great Fire of London
In September 1666, a great fire ripped
through London for 5 days, destroying 60% of
the city.

11. Rebuilding London
• Houses were rebuilt with stone rather than wood
to prevent great fires.
• Christopher Wren rebuilt St. Paul’s Cathedral.

• London became the largest city in the world and a
global centre for trade, politics, and finance.
• London was also a city of poverty and millions of people
lived in slums.
• In 1863, the first underground railway line was opened.

16. 21st Century
There was a terrorist attack on 7th July 2005, right after
London had won the bid to host the Olympics. Three
bombings in the Underground and one on a double
decker bus.
