by the Romans, led by
Emperor Claudius.
 Londinium –
it was the ancient
name of the city.
The Houses of ParliamentFrom the middle of

until 1512 it was
the Royal home to
the Kings and
Queens of England
-This is the place of
coronation and a
burial site for English
and British
monarchs.
-Isaak Newton and
Charles Darwin were
buried here
Big Ben
The clock
tower is a
part of the
Palace of
Westminster
It’ s called Big
Ben because
of the Great
Bell at the top
of the Tower.
It’s 96 m. high.
The great bell
(It weighs 13 tonnes)
The hour hand is
nearly 3m long
The minute hand is
4.30 m long
Buckingham Palace
Queen Victoria was the first monarch who
lived here. Now it is the official residence
of Queen Elizabeth II
CHANGING THE GUARD
Every morning at 11.30 you can see the ceremony,
called Changing the Guards.
There are about 600 rooms, 78 bathrooms, 92
offices, a cinema and a swimming pool in the Palace.
It has its own Post office and Police Station.
About 400 people work at the Palace, including
servants, chefs, cleaners, plumbers, gardeners,
drivers, electricians and 2 men who look after 300
clocks.
Tower Bridge has stood over the river Thames in London
since 1894.It is the only bridge over the river Thames that
can be raised.
The bridge was officially opened in 1894 by the Prince of
Wales – the future King Edward VII and his wife, the Princess
of Wales.
Nowadays the Tower Bridge lifts about 4-5
times a week or 500 times per year to let
ships go through.
The Tower of London
It was built more then 900 years ago.
It was originally built by William the Conqueror, who
invaded England in 1066.

British Museum
The British Museum was established in 1753. Sir Hans
Sloane, was the founder of the British Museum. He was a
great physician and naturalist. His collection included about
71, 000 objects of all kinds, 40, 000 printed books, 7,000
manuscripts, 337 volumes of dried plants, antiques from
Sudan, Egypt, Greece, Rome.
St. Paul Cathedral
The first cathedral was built
of wood in 604 AD.
It was destroyed by fire in
675 AD and was rebuilt 10
years later.
It was destroyed again by the
Vikings in 962AD and rebuilt
in stone by the Normans. .
The third building was
destroyed in the Great Fire of
London of 1666.
The new Cathedral was built
between 1675 and 1711 by
Sir Christopher Wren
London Eye
It stands on the south
bank of the river
Thames.
It’s the world’s highest
observation Wheel. It
was built in 1999.
It was officially opened
on 31 December 1999
for the beginning of the
new Millennium in
2000.
The whole construction
of the Wheel costs 70
million British pounds.
