Teachers provide summaries of strategies they use to engage students and promote learning:
- Plan lessons carefully with questions to challenge students and check understanding. Establish consistent routines and discipline policies to create a positive learning environment.
- Relate subjects to real-world examples and take risks in teaching methods to give students different experiences. Build relationships with students so they will strive to learn.
- Provide timely feedback on assessments and ensure students believe in themselves as the teacher believes in them. Speak with colleagues daily to share best practices.
- Maintain discipline respectfully with humor and by not holding grudges while also motivating students with recognition displays.

What is GREAT teaching and learning? By the staff at Chalfonts.
1. What do you do
everyday to make
GREAT learning happen?
2.
3. “…your class has to see, smell and
feel in their hands that you love
your subject…”
“…there has to be humour…”
“…plan your lessons…”
“…plan your questions that you will
ask to stretch everyone and probe
understanding'”
7. What do you do
everyday to make
GREAT learning happen?
8.
9. I consistently try to take risks in
my teaching methods to give
students a different experience
to try and engage them.
I also relate every subject to
the real world to make it
relevant.
10.
11. I use a traffic light
system to target
differentiated
questions at students.
12.
13. What do you do
everyday to make
GREAT learning happen?
14.
15. I have consistency in classroom
routines to help create an
atmosphere of mutual respect;
this impacts on how students
feel about their ability to learn.
I try to make sure routines are
simple and known by everyone.
19. • Min quizzes – Students know that I may
have these and if they fail, they gain a
detention! Therefore, it ensures that
they do some form of revision.
• Multiple visual aids – Same information
may appear as a table, spider diagram,
picture etc. Different avenues of
learning.
• Environment – Teaching Standards
require create a positive, learning
environment. My interpretation of this
is displays, posters, humour, recognition.
20. What do you do
everyday to make
GREAT learning happen?
21.
22. I own my lesson.
There can only be
one teacher and I
make sure the kids
know it’s me.
23.
24. • Build relationships with students
and they will surprise you
• Always have a starter to get
students engaged as soon as they
arrive
• Students enjoy problem solving so
a problem for them to solve by the
end of the lesson and they will
work their socks off!

26.
27. What do you do
everyday to make
GREAT learning happen?
30. “…mark tests and exams asap and
give feedback asap before students
forget what was on the paper…”
“…students have to believe in
themselves but this will only happen
if the teacher believes in them…”
"...speak to your colleagues every day
and share good practice as there is no
'best' practice..."
31.
32. Time and listening, more
specifically giving a student
time to think and formulate
their answer. This could be by
simply waiting or asking a
student and then returning to
them after a period of time.
33. What do you do
everyday to make
GREAT learning happen?
34.
35. KNOWLEDGE & RESEARCH – Ensure I’m
mentally equipped with facts, to support
my teaching & if any questions are asked
BOUNCING – Ask a student a question, but
then have to ask another student a Q and
so on…
PREDATOR – Pounce on any low level
disruption, before it may escalate. This
also shows students my expectation and
the line that shouldn’t be crossed
STORYTELLING – Puts it into context for the
students and may also bring it to life
