1. Sharing Teaching and Learning Ideas
Half Term Four Focus: Assessment
Key Idea: Quizzing as a form of assessment
Using quizzing as part of regular classroom practice can be a way to formatively assess
students’ knowledge and understanding and adjust the course of the lesson depending on
how well your students respond. As regular quizzing is ‘low-stakes’, students are able to
improve their knowledge and understanding by making mistakes and learning from them.
Ways you can do this in your classroom:
• Begin each lesson with a short review of learning, this could be 5 multiple choice
questions displayed as a starter activity. This gives you the opportunity to assess what
needs to be revisited / how far you can now move on.
• If you require students to read something at home, provide them with the text and a
number of questions to assess their understanding of what they have read.
• A formative quiz could be set at the end of a unit / section of work to assess
understanding.
• Vocabulary or spelling quizzes can be set up on Show My Homework.
• Quizlet: an online tool allowing you to create your own quizzes to be completed in class
or at home.
