GREAT Teaching and Learning
GREET every student as they enter your classroom. Build positive relationships from the start and
develop these in your lessons. Allow students to see your passion and enthusiasm for your subject. Inspire
them with your subject knowledge and link their learning to the real world, where possible.
ROUTINES are key in every classroom; students respond well to consistency and structure. Be
organised and be prepared. Have an activity ready to begin as students enter your classroom. Have a seating
plan for every class. Ensure students are quiet and behind their chairs at the end of the lesson.
EXPECTATIONS should be made clear to students. Have high expectations regarding behaviour
and follow the Professional Conduct policy. Have high expectations regarding the achievement of every
student. Set goals. Model your expectations to your students ; model behaviour and model exemplar work.
ACCELERATEthe progress of all students. Differentiate from the top down to ensure all students
can access the learning but challenge every student. Use questioning techniques to get the best out of
students. Experiment and take risks in the classroom to develop students’ engagement and understanding.
Change students’ mindsets by unlocking learning.
TIME and TALK are needed in every classroom. Allow students time to think about tasks, to
respond to questions and to reflect on their learning. Talk to students about their progress; communicate
strengths and improvements and give time to work on these. Give students feedback and praise; build their
self esteem and enable them to achieve their goals.
