Editor's Notes
Creation
The creation phase of the touring show lifecycle is supported by a central site called Planete Cirque where 4000 employees can share ideas so that Cirque du Soleil stays ahead of trends
This relates to our MIS 2501 class, Enterprise IT Architecture. In MIS 2501, we created file sharing servers where teams can share information and documents. This relates to the Intranet that Cirque du Soleil created and was successful with. The Intranet allows for the sharing of information enterprise-wide.
Design
A centralized database of information enabled Cirque du Soleil’s success in the design section of the Touring Show Lifecycle
Stored patterns, wigs, make-up
Reduced time and loss of information
This relates to MIS 2502 – Data Analytics, in which we learned about the structure of databases in an organization and how to manipulate data
Preparation
IT enhanced the artist’s training experience by developing an internal application, the Kin-Cirque application
Allows physical fitness specialists to closely monitor each artist’s optimal muscular development
Learned how to develop applications in MIS 3501 - Data-Centric Application Development and MIS 3502 - Application Integration and Evaluation
Diffusion
Cirque du Soleil’s website attracted all types of visitors. It offered attractive products.
Ticket sales
Special promotions
Press galleries
The site was intuitive to use and had exceptional features such as the Cirque Club.
We learned in MIS 3506 – Digital Design Studio how to prototype an interactive website that is tailored to our clients business needs, just like Cirque’s IT organization did with its website.
Logistics
IT allowed Cirque to set-up its tour quickly by creating a document management system that stored technical documentation.
The software standardized over 150,000 terms and integrated the system with other Cirque databases.
We learned how to develop and integrate web applications.
Performance resource management
IT developed the Virtual Talent Scout and HR Intranet to manage its external and internal people management
We learned how to develop applications based on business need in MIS 3506 – Digital Design Studio
Cirque uses four types of systems:
Knowledge Management
Cirque uses its application “Open Eyes” as a Knowledge Management System
“Open Eyes” allows employees to all go to one place to share and distribute information about new trends and ideas related to the circus
Customer Relationship Management
Cirque uses its website as a customer relationship management system
The site displays relevant information to customers about shows, ticket sales, among other information
Supply Chain Management
Cirque uses the document management system and technical innovation/transportation of equipment as a supply chain management system
The system allows Cirque to setup shows more quickly and efficiently, just as a supply chain management system enables fast and efficient procurement
Human Resource Management
The Virtual Talent Scout attracts and finds new talent for Cirque
The HR Intranet acts as a HRM system for Cirque; it stores various HR employee policies
Creation
The creation phase is similar to Research & Development in an organization
All employees come together to stay ahead of circus trends and create new ideas for shows
Design
The design phase of the Touring Show Lifecycle is similar to the technical process that represents “manufacturing”
The system stores information and makes clothing patterns, make-up, and more available to performers to put together their costumes
Preparation
This stage can be related to training and resource development as a traditional business process
Allows physical fitness specialists to closely monitor each artist’s muscular development
This could be related to credentialing for employees; artists need to meet certain physical requirements
Diffusion
Cirque’s website creates a business strategy and process for managing customers
The website provided a variety of services and perks to customers
Examples:
Contests
Special promotions
Press galleries
Multimedia experiences
Artist and employee recruitment
Logistics
The logistics stage can be related to supply chain management
The IT department created a document management system to help with the transportation and set-up of the circus
Document Management System stores technical documentation
Performance resource management
Cirque uses the performance resource management section of the Touring Show Lifecycle as a human resource management function
The Virtual Talent Scout searches and finds new talent for the circus
MediCirque is used to keep employees healthy and reduces risk of injuries
HR Intranet provides all employees internal HR needs
Cirque is successful with IT
Cirque uses IT in its own unique way to solve business problems
People change their ways of doing things (processes) around IT to enable it to help the organization
Example:
People start using the Intranet and website for employee and customer use
IT fits into Cirque du Soleil’s business model effectively, there is a small gap between IT and business
They seem to have become interdependent on one another
Why is IT successful at Cirque?
The Cirque has grown tremendously since Danielle joined 8 years ago
IT has been able to support the growth of the circus
IT enabled Cirque to reach customer that they would otherwise not have been able to gain
Ultimately, the best measure for success is that IT has helped Cirque increase the bottom line by cutting costs and increasing revenue
