8. Claudius Ptolemy
▪ Way back (90-168A.D.) a Greek map maker named
Claudius Ptolemy called our island “MANIOLAS”
▪ According to Fr. Francisco Colin in 1663, an early
historian of the Philippines,
▪ Maniolas( which probably Manila) was the name
used by Claudius Ptolemy to refer to the group of
islands south of China.

name to “Las Islas De Poniente” but the

✘ Portuguese referred the Island of
Luzon as “Luzones Island”
✘ the Island of Mindanao “Ilhas de
Liquíos Celebes” because of the
existence of Celebes Sea south of

13. Ruy Lopez de Villalobos
✘ In 1543 Ruy Lopez de Villalobos land
in the island of Leyte and Samar for the
honor of the Prince Philip II of Austria
that later on became a king, Villalobos
called the Island “Las Islas Filipinas”
Later on it became Felipinas then the
name became irrevocable until Spanish

✘ Andrés Bonifacio's suggested that name for Filipino
intended in government for 1896-1897
✘ but unrecognized by non-Tagalog Filipinos.
✘ But in defend of Historian they stated the use of
Katagalugan was not intended to demean other
ethnic but it meant “People of the River” from the
word Taga-Ilog which is meant to the people in the

Ricarte proposed the name
✘ The term has been pushed by many pro-Rizal
Filipinos, however, the term itself is criticized by
many as Rizal was not in favor of Philippine
independence during the Philippine revolution
against Spain as he believed that the Philippines
was "not yet ready" to be separated from "mother
