2. Process
Using pixel art, I started by creating the land I was going to have while leaving space for
the water I knew I was going to add. Initially I was going to use a grassy bank and river,
but then decided to change it to an icy ground so that it fit in with the practice pixel art
character I was going to make and animate. The general templated idea was based off
one of the images in my research. I used a darker colour to add shadow to the underside
of the ice and indentations on the lighter colour.
I then added the water in in a different layer, with a darker colour over the top to give
the effect of the shadow that the ice cast onto the water.
3. Trying to get the bridge drawn
correctly wasn’t easy and the posts
on either side all had to be drawn
separately at first. Then I filled in the
side using the picture reference as a
guide. Once that was done I could
add in some extra details to the
posts and start to draw the animated
character. I knew that in my video
game I wouldn’t probably have to
draw a bridge since they wouldn’t
exist, but it was good practice at
different shapes and pictures. I then
drew a rough, not so detailed pixel
art penguin to be able to make an
animation so that the penguin would walk across the bridge. To do this, I created
multiple versions of the penguin and edited them slightly to make the feet appear to
move. Then, once I had created the frames, I slowly moved the penguin down the
bridge, swapping between layers to get the movement look that I wanted.
4. Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you
include in your final product?
I’ll make sure that I have a similar layout design to my
experiment and my actual product since I have some experience
drawing it now with hopefully a similar level of detail. I’ll also
most likely use the same character design but hopefully with
some improvements.
