2. Process• Today I started work on two important aspects of my game. The main playable character (as well as his weapon)
and the main playable level.
I knew for a while that I wanted the main character to take on some form of a
knight so when I started production I already knew how I wanted him to look.
The hardest part of it was just getting the dimensions right for his body, head,
arms. etc. I ended up settling for the design shown in the image. It presents an
small, semi – cute styled sprite. It may be a good idea for for me to change the
design slightly to make it look less “cute” and more combat ready as I am not
sure if this design will ultimately fit into the game. I did use lighter and darker
blocks of each color to work as shading for the character and the spear to add to
the detail. I thought about tying the spear to certain abilities I will implement
later on so I wanted to make it seem slightly supernatural / magical. Because of
this I created a bright yellow spear that is slightly translucent to act as a spear
made of light. It may help to add some luminosity to it in the future where the
light could also effect the surrounding environment.
Alongside this I also started production on my main level. I used
greys, reds and browns to create the basic textures for the castle.
Once I finish the castles basic layout I plan to shade and texture it. I
would also like to add brickwork around the floor of the castle to act
as a foundation and to build into the castle courtyard (which should
be playable).
3. Process
Today I developed the portal for the enemies to spawn through. Used a variety of different
purples and blended them in a circular motion to create this and I’m happy with the end
result.
I also finished the main structure for the castle and added some floor work in. I am
happy with the castles design however I would like to go back and shade it later. The
brickwork could do with a lot of improvement. In my opinion the bricks are to small and
the contrast between the light and dark areas of the brick make it dizzying to look at. I
would like to make the bricks bigger and tone down the contrast a little bit.
4. Process
• Two new enemies have been added to the level. I
think both have a pretty unique design as a group
however to say the floating head (1st image) is
the main enemy of the map, it looks to similar to
the more basic enemy in the second image. I
think I should have spent more time on it to
make it look like more of a leading enemy.
Bearing this in mind, intimidation is a good trait
that this enemy lacks completely.
• Alongside this I also updated the level design slightly
by adding shading to areas like towers, characters and
portals to make the level pop out a bit more and look
more visually pleasing. I am happy with many areas of
the level design although there are still more that can
be touched up.
5. Process
• Today I started animating my
game with Photoshop putting
screenshots together to create a
frame animation. I had a
multitude of different leg
positions that I switched between
to make the character look like
they were walking. Once I had got
quite far into the animation I
realised I had a lack of special
effects which would have been
nice to add in. I should think
about this in future projects.
• After this I put rendered the
animation and put it into
premiere to add sound effects.
Personally I thought after seeing
it all complete that the sound
effects didn’t necessarily fit with
the game in sound and syncing to
the animation.
