1. This document summarizes a classroom observation of a trainee, Mara, teaching a 5th grade class.
2. The observer notes that Mara had good eye contact and classroom management skills, though classroom management was also handled by the lead teacher who knows the students.
3. Mara directed the structure of the class, presented questions, answered student questions, and followed the lesson plan, though the timing of activities varied. Materials were prepared and macroskills like speaking and listening were practiced.

CLASSROOM OBSERVATION Nº
PRACTICE II (2017)
TRAINEE’S NAME: Mara
School: Escuela N.6 Course: 5th D
1. Eye Contact:
Good eye contact, warm and welcoming (nice job!)
2. Voice/ Intonation:
Too quiet, need a strategy when giving instructions and when getting answers from
students in the class
3. Classroom Management Skills (discipline)
Much of the management handled by the lead teacher, as she knows the students better
Have you talked about discipline roles with her?
Good use of hand signals at the start of class. Keep using this strategy!
Good job giving time limits
4. Teacher’s Roles:
Directed the structure of the class, and managed the timing of activities
Presented questions
Answered student questions individually
5. Students’ grouping:
3 rows of desks, students sitting in pairs
2. 6. Stages in the class:
PRESENTATION.
PRACTICE.
PRODUCTION.
7. Macroskills:
Speaking, listening, writing, reading (all evident, some stronger than others)
8. Following the plan:
Plan was followed, timing of the activities varied
9. Use the blackboard:
Used to keep track of points for the game, students used to draw bugs, used to check
spelling of words from unscrambling activity (nice job setting up the blackboard with
individual spaces for letters), did a great job stopping to clarify spelling with the
students. used to keep track of page numbers so students who missed instruction could
find the right page
10. Use of AIDS:
11. Materials prepared by trainees:
Bug flash cards (very good, big images, students knew to use them), CD + player for
audio section)
12. Use of a textbook:
Most activities came from textbook during this lesson: audio, spelling, writing, numbers
0-100 activity + there is / there are activity
13. Rapport with the students:
Positive relationship with students, showed that they are engaged because they ask you
a lot of questions, missing: discipline, students are excited to be learning, discipline and
control will come with structure and practice
14: Classroom setting:
Colourful, student work on the walls, bright
15: Methodological approach followed:
FINAL COMMENTS:
From meeting after:
One highlight: You mentioned that this was your first time presenting the lesson first
3. Nice job directing the class from the beginning, keeping on schedule, etc.
Area for improvement: You said that you wanted to work on your communication
How can you ensure that all students hear you? You have more of a quiet voice, how
do you make sure students can hear you? You seemed comfortable using hand signals
to show students they need to listen. Explain what you are doing to the class. Use this
strategy every day, and communication will get easier!
