Reflection on my practicum experience
I had neverthoughtI was goingto enjoymypracticumsat primaryschool as muchas I did.
Of course classeswere notperfect,butnow that they endedIcan say I feel reallyhappyand
confident. Thatexperience isahinge inmylife,anda clue to thinkaboutwhere andwithwhomI
wantto work inmy nearfuture.
Before startingourfirstlesson, mypedagogical partner(Mariel) andIwere extremely
nervous.Iwas expectedtobe the firstteacher andMariel the firstassistant,butwe had to change
our plansbecause of mynervesandinsecurity.Inspite of the factthat I wantedtoleave the room,
I breathed deeplyandstayed,andmy partnertook the reins. Alwayswithahuge smile inherface
and tryingto motivate childrenwithfunnyfacesandoutstandingmovements,she didit awesome.
Afterherturn, I hada model tofollowthe firsttime Ihadto be in frontof a class.The rest of the
classesIfeltmore preparedthanthat frighteningfirstday,andI couldstart to enjoythe lessons.
As I saidbefore,classeswerenotperfectatall.Ihad to fightwithmyworst enemy:my
softvoice.Sometimes,itwasverydifficultforchildrentohearme.I didnot wantto shout,so I
usedmyhands to askthemfor silence.Besides,some critical incidentssuchasquarrelsbetween
studentsappeared,butIcouldluckilymanage themverywell.
WorkingwithMariel wasthe bestpart of that marvelousexperience. Onthe one hand,we
spenthoursand hoursplanningthe lessons andpreparingthe materialsused,alwayswith
delicious food,bittermates andfunnytalksinbetween.Onthe otherhand, we were agoodteam
inside the classroom.WhenIwasthe teacher,she wasan excellentassistant,alwayshelpfuland
solicitous.Whenitwasherturnto be the teacher,Itriedto helpheras much as possible,standing
on a side of the classroomalwaysheadful toheror one child’scall.
Regardingthe mentorteacher,Ican say our relationwasquite good.She showedherself
helpful mostof the timesandshe gave Mariel and me some piecesof advice whenitwas
necessary.Igot a bitsurprisedbecause she didnotresultaslovelyandwarmas I imagine a
primaryteachershouldbe.The vice principal, onthe contrary,always receivedus withkindness
and hospitality.She made usfeel welcomeeveryTuesdayandThursdayof August.
All inall, thisfantasticandpleasingexperience fulfilledmyheart. Also,itmade me realize
howwell Icouldrelate with small students, eventhoughthattalkingtostrangers,nomattertheir
age,is reallydifficulttome. To conclude,Iwouldlike tohighlightmyhappinessandthe self-
confidence Isuccessfullybuiltduringmypracticumexperience.
